Toilet Training for Children with Autism and other Developmental Disabilities

presented by

Maranda L. Porter, MS/P

.... Outreach Coordinator/Behavior Consultant

The Reardon Center for Autism/Advance Academy

This workshop provides an overview of behaviorally based effective

toilet-training programs for children with autism, other developmental

disabilities, and/or just hard to train typical developing children. This

workshop is aimed at parents as well as professionals who deal with children

that have not responded successfully to traditional methods of toilet training,

or show inappropriate elimination patterns. Participants will learn how to

measure, implement, and assess the effectiveness of basic behavioral methods for

reducing toileting problems. Participants need no prior knowledge or formal

training in applied behavior analysis. The presenters will discuss

representative cases and their outcomes, and can give advice to participants

about approaches to their own cases.

Participants attending this workshop will learn the following:

•Step-by-step instructions for the development and implementation of effective

systematic toilet training.

•Data collection tools, visual supports, and social stories to promote

successful implementation.

•Increase awareness and knowledge of the impact of Autism and other

developmental disabilities on the training of toileting skills.

•Learn positive and proactive intervention strategies to planning a toileting

program.

•Identify and understand the main triggers for problems in toilet training

(problems with body awareness, poor communication skills, fear of new situations

or changes to established routines in toileting, and difficulties interpreting

bodily sensations for toileting)
