Guest guest
Sounds like an allergy to me, too. Do you use any fertilizers, weed killers, etc. on your yard? I have an allergy to grass and many other outdoor things, but I have a question. I was cutting grass (it's been raining for 5 days got a total of 8 inches) yesterday evening, anyways I had my mask and goggles on to prevent the stuff from going into my lungs and eyes, BUT I was itching like crazy with bumps all over my arms when I got inside. Could this be part of the allergy. This is the first time I've ever had this happen, I took some benedryl and it all went away and my peak flow #'s didn't change, it was still in the upper 400's. I don't recall having that reaction before. Terry I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. Guest guest
I never have this as I take at least 1,000 mg of vitamin C ten minutes before I start eating. This prevents allergic reactions to the food that I eat. I am allergic to everything so I need something to stop the reaction. Before I started using the C I lived on phenergan which stops swelling due to food allergies and nausea. It is an antihistamine mainly for nausea. I had a friend who lived on prednisone and she was required to use her inhaler ten minutes before she started to eat every single time she ate and then she would throw up anyway after she ate. We used to go to lunch together as she was embarrassed about using her inhaler in public and I wasn't. I would use mine with her just to help her feel better. When we would get back to work she would have to go to the ladies to throw up. I don't think she inhaler idea before eating was really helping her but that was her doctors idea. I didn't know about the C thing back then or I would have told her to try it. I only learned about in about ten years ago. Alice ps- I used to have really severe GERD but after a few years on the C it totally cleared up! I guess the C did it but I really don't know for sure. Before the C I lived in Zantac too. Guest guest
Hi Terry, GERD is a known asthma trigger and it sounds like that is a possible cause for the coughing with your meal. Other thoughts would be a food allergy of some sort, or if eating out when it happens maybe perfume, smoke, or something else in the air around you. If you are not already on treatment for GERD (usually a medicine like Prilosec or Nexiuum), a trial of Prilosec (which is OTC now) would be worth a shot to see if it is helpful. Discuss your symptoms with your doctor to see what he suggests, especially if you are already on meds for GERD. Silent GERD turned to out to be a factor complicating my son's asthma. He never complained of any symptoms, so we never suspected it was part of the problem, but he always burped and coughed alot with meals. The asthma doctor figured it out. Prilosec has helped. So glad to hear your asthma is doing better with the symbicort and that you have been able to get back to your regular activities! > > I know this was gone over once before. Guest guest
Your peak flow meter, have him check it, maybe it's it's not reading correctly, they've been known to do that. I have alot of triggers for my asthma/allergies (14) and i've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'll always have to use my inhaler at least 2X a week . Is this a normal thing to have good numbers but still have attacks? It seems to me that it's all about trigger exposure. Despite taking my meds everyday as perscribed i stil have problems. Guest guest
Check your peak flows several times a day, especially when you are needing your rescue inhaler. Perhaps exposure to your allergy triggers is causing problems during the day when you are doing things, but your peak flows at home are better when you are inside in a controlled environment. Maybe keep a chart of what you are doing and where you are at when needing to use the rescue inhaler to show the doctor. It might show enough of a pattern to give some clues and would make him more aware that you are having problems. If you are still having a lot of problems, an adjustment of your meds might be needed or possibly figuring out what else could be done to reduce exposure to your triggers. Maybe something where you are during the day is setting you off, like new carpet or mold or poor ventilation. Hopefully you are on some kind of allergy medicine and allergy shots might be a consideration. Hang in there and I hope you are feeling better soon, > > I was wondering if anyone could answer this for me: my peak flows are > green when i check them in the am/pm but i'm still having asthma > attcack in between the am/pm peak flow checks so when my doctor looks > at my numbers he's seeing that i'm in good shape because my numbers are > deceiving him into this misinformed notion that my asthma is in good > control when i'm still having to use my rescue inhaler 2X a week, > sometimes more. Guest guest
Hi Terry, Leg cramps can be a side effect of Advair in some people. I think the serevent is the culprit if it is a drug side effect. Ask your doctor what he thinks. I don't think I've heard of muscle weakness as a problem from it though. It could also be because some of your electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, or calcium) are a bit low. I used to get terrible leg cramps at night that drove me nuts, starting with my third pregnancy, and it improved greatly after adding extra calcium and magnesium to my prenatal vitamins, on the doctor's advice. I continued to have problems, although not as bad after the birth and have continued to take extra and it makes a huge difference. But again, I didn't have any muscle weakness, just terrible cramps or feeling like I had to get up and move my legs. So I'm not sure that totally applies to your situation. Have a great day! > > Have any of you found the your muscles are NOT what they use to be? I am > forever getting cramps in my legs, my muscles are not as strong as they use > to be. Guest guest
Steroids of all kinds can cause both the cramping and muscle weakness. Oral steroids are, of course, much worse than inhaled steroids. Basically, they suck the vitamins & minerals out of you. My dr has me on prescription calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin-d & zinc. This combo has helped ALOT with the cramping. I still have the muscle weakness, but I have a recumbant bike I use to help build them up. You might have your dr check your potassium and other levels next time you do blood work. Kathleen > > > > Have any of you found the your muscles are NOT what they use to be? Guest guest
I will do that, I've been wondering about my potassium, I've had that deplete before I ever had asthma. Thank you I will ask my pcp about this, I should really be more vocal I guess about checking those levels with being on these asthma meds! I'm also going to call the nurse from the insurance company who calls here once a month and ask her about this too! Terry I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. Guest guest
Hi Terry, Are you drinking enough water? Also, leg cramps, aside from being a side effect from medication, can also be a potassium deficiency. Try getting more bananas and tomatoes (I know about the salmonella issue, but cooked tomatoes are OK). HTH susanstein@...
Guest guest
I hadn't been but have made myself start drinking at least 1 liter every 3 hours, I keep a bottle with me. I noticed when I took a shower today that even if I over stretched a arm the muscle would tighten up and feel sore, I bet it is the Potassium, all this I'm experiencing I bet you is that! I'm going for a banana right now, just bought some at the store. Out side of tomato's and potatoes what else has potassium in it that I can consume? I don't want to have to result to yet another pill to take. I SWEAR, if this dang gone fly doesn't leave me alone, I'm going to have to go on him with a fly swatter LOL! Annoying thing! Terry I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much. ~Mother Teddy Bear's Early Learning ProgramEstablished August of 1992 From: asthma [mailto:asthma ] On Behalf Of Sent: Thursday, June 19, 2008 3:22 PMTo: soccer.mom@...; asthma Subject: Re:question Hi Terry, Are you drinking enough water? Guest guest
Terry, Orange juice is rich in potassium. Also I found this web site that will give foods with potassium. http://nutrition.about.com/od/foodfun/p/potassium_foods.htm Scroll down the page and you will come to Potassium in Foods. Guest guest
Regarding the tomatoes...there are many kinds of tomatoes...so you shouldn't let your fear of the poisoned ones stop you from eating other kinds of tomatoes. Drinking a lot of water seems to ease some of the pain too.
