Hi all,

Our 5-year-old son seems to only want to spend time with his dad when it's time

for play but when it's time for bed or anything having to do with caring for

him, he wants me. We also have a daughter so we really want to try to split our

time with each of them so they both get to spend time with each of us. Any

suggestions on how we can get him to warm up and want to spend time with his dad

more?

Thanks,

Kathy

It seems he associates you with being taken care of and his dad associated with play. Try doing as you usually would and have dad there too. I am not sure he is ready for just dad, it will push him further away if you try to force it. My son was like that for the longest time, he wanted nothing to do with me period. It was like I had to gain his trust before he would allow me to be alone with him without his dad, made me feel horrible but he connected with him so much more since I worked and dad stayed home. SHow him it can fun to have dad there too when its bedtime or bath time, try a new routine, sing....get silly and make it interesting. It sounds so silly but it worked for my son, he would tolerate me being around because I entertained him, but it took time for him to be alone with me.
