Tonya,Definitely get an attorney. I know from my husband having to pay child support and alimony that the child support his ex received did not go on her reportable income for taxes but all the alimony she receives…my husband gets to deduct from taxes and she must claim it as income on hers… so she pays taxes on that income. Definitely seek advice in advance. Hope someone can help me with some advice or perhaps the name of a good attorney I can ask a few questions about changing child support to alimony now that my child is over 18. I need to be able to get SSI for her, but I can't with still receiving substantial child support. Problem is that I will be putting her in a host/group home shortly, so I will have to get her the SSI for that or else pay the home $700 a month! My ex still owes me alimony, so that at least is still on the court order. Do not know if I need to get the court order changed or can just tell Social Security that I do not receive child support any more, as I consider that alimony now. It's all very confusing and I need help solving this. I must have this money to live on and maintain the home I have had for my child these past 7 years, so that she can still come here to her old home and room several times a week. I just cannot handle her 24/7 anymore by myself, as I am still single and live alone. Thanks for any help or advice in advance.

My son will turn 18 next year. I am looking for an SSI/Divorce/Special Needs Attorney in or near the middle Georgia area. If you have recommendations, please mail me off list.

Thanks,

Joy Brown
