Guest guest
Shenanigans is a program of applied improvisational theatre that uses theatre and improv games to develop better socialization skills in adolescents, teens, and adults with Asperger's and autism, ADHD, PDD-NOS, and related conditions. We are excited about our new program Code Breakers, targeted to high school teens and post-secondary young adults with Asperger's, high-functioning autism, or others who are having difficulty understanding the complex rules of interpersonal communication. We'll be using the techniques of improvisational theatre and role playing to create a more intense, focused approach to real-life challenges in the community and workplace. Our goal is to help our young adults discover pragmatic tools to help them break the mysterious, hidden code of social and cultural communication and develop skills to succeed in life as they move away from the K12 environment and into the adult world. The Code Breakers classes will be taught by , an autism dad with years of improv experience who is now finishing up his certification in DIR/Floortime therapy. has been actively involved in Shenanigans and is now helping us develop the activities to support the objectives of the Code Breakers program. Because family support will be an important part of the participants' success, we are combining our Code Breakers classes with Prism Parenting, a parallel program of facilitated conversation for parents (siblings welcome) that will follow the topics in the Code Breakers classes. Dr. Karla Wade, an educator, author, international speaker, and one of our program advisors, will conduct these sessions with the family while the young adults are in the Code Breakers class. Karla is an expert in the issues of inclusion and transition. We feel that the combination of working with the young adults and providing support and techniques to the family will increase the likelihood of a successful outcome for all.We are conducting a short series of program preview classes over the summer before the complete program is launched in the fall. The summer series will be 4 weekly classes of 1.5 hours each, starting the week of June 25 or as soon as we reach our minimum enrollment. Choose from three possible locations:Monday - at The Cottage School in Roswell, 1:30-3:00Tuesday - at Chestnut Ridge Christian Church in NE Cobb, 4:00-5:30Wednesday - at Elm St Arts Center in downtown Woodstock, 4:00-5:30Special preview cost of $250 for the Code Breakers summer series that includes the Prism Parenting sessions.Contact Sandy Bruce for more info and to register. or sandy@...
