Guest guest
Hello , The school you are thinking of is Coral Wood and it is in DeKalb. I happened to grow up in that same distinct and it has always been an excellent school! I have seen it mentioned in this group many times. I live in Cobb County and my son goes to Kincaid Elem. He started at Blackwell Elem. @ 3yrs. old in their Special Needs Pre-K program (Kincaid does not have a Special Needs Pre-K program) and then he transitioned to Kincaid (our home school) for Kindergarten. He is now in first grade at Kincaid and doing very well! I cannot say enough good things about Cobb County and I feel as if God truly put us here for this reason. Best of luck to you and please do not hesitate to shoot me an email off line @ kgb5@... if you would like more info. Thanks! I'm writing to ask for guidance about Georgia County Schools. My grand-baby, age 4, has not been formally diagnosed and has never been to school. She displays several of the symptoms of autism. Her parents currently live in Gwinnett County, but will have to move soon. I wonder if folks on this list might be willing to share their experiences with different county public schools with us. (Good, bad or indifferent). I understand that there is a school called Coral..... ok, my memory is slipping here, coral woods or bells I think, that is very good, I'm not sure what county it is in though, perhaps Dekalb. Does anyone know about this school? I heard that the City of Decatur schools might have few resources due to its small size. Please share your experiences so that my daughter and son-in-law can get a good idea of which county might be best to move to. Thanks In Advance! Guest guest
Hi folks, Can you guys say what is good about these particular schools in detail please?? Anyone know of programs to help high functioning autism, asperger's in the Atlanta area they have first hand experience with. Public would be best. My son can do grade level but autistic behaviors would send him to special ed so right now doing cyber academy online public school but want him in society. Our experience in Cobb County has been awful as other parents I've spoken to also. Our elementary Vaughan stinks for special needs. They don't recognize the real medical situation and just really want to keep their great stats up and are not interested in helping but blaming, really sad and really closed minded. My son was constantly suspended and never hit, etc. another student. It seems they just don't want to deal with any differences and are really good only for the golden students with no learning differences. Stay away from West Cobb and esp. the upper crusty Vaughan. Guest guest
That is great advice! EAST COBB schools seem to have the better reputation. What I meant by “great” (and I do mean GREAT vs. GOOD) is that each teacher my son has had genuinely seems to care about him and his well being and his progression. I haven’t had to fight to get ST or OT services - ever. At one point in special needs pre-k he was only getting 30 min. per week of OT and I simply asked if we could up that to one hour per week instead. An addendum to his IEP was called immediately and the change was put into force immediately. Another example…. At the conclusion of our IEP meeting during his Kindergarten year at Kincaid (this was in December of 2009) if was determined that my son to be pulled out the following year (1st grade) for almost everything – math, reading, social science. In April of last year I got an email form his teacher asking if I could come in for an IEP addendum meeting. I was SCARED TO DEATH! When I got to the meeting, it turned out that they felt as if he had made significant progress in the past 4 mos. and they suggested just trying him in an inclusion class all day for 1st grade and not being pulled out for anything. Here we are in January of 2011 and he is thriving in his inclusion class. There is a special ed and a regular ed teacher in the class, and although he does need frequent redirection, for the most part he is doing really really well. I feel as if his Kindergarten teachers “went the extra mile” by calling this meeting and making this change. They could have easily (and lazily) left things as they were and just hoped for the best for him. I hope that helps! Krista Brown From: autism-georgia [mailto:autism-georgia ] On Behalf Of cmrosh@...
