Guest guest
A very helpful staffer at Gwinnett parks, who has a son on the spectrum, has organized several " creative recreation " classes meant specifically for kids with cognitive disabilities like autism. There's painting, pottery and a very cool dance therapy class that our daughter went to this week for the first time. They're all at the Pinckneyville recreation center, one of the nicest and newest buildings in the park system, on Peachtree Industrial Blvd about 10 minutes north of I-85 and Indian Trail. The dance class is great. Our 8-year-oldh daughter, who we think of as having a very short attention span and not following instructions well, went right along with the teacher, following the steps and motions. She wants to go back. One catch: They need just two more kids to enroll to keep the class going. It's $33 for county residents for four weekly sessions (Weds. nights at 6:30), which is a great price. You'd pay that much per hour, or more, at some private studios. Anybody want to join in? It's all ages, which means younger children to teens. They seem very flexible and willing to work with parents as they get this started. You can call the Pinckneyville Communty Recreation center at to register. Kim Gerlach is the lady behind the recreational therapy classes, but anybody there can help you (Kim was the woman who presented the classes at this month's Spectrum meeting, for those who were there). Have a great weekend, Marcus
