Guest guest
I don't think the Catholic church has any general rules on special needs kids and the sacraments. I know of several instances, at different churches, where special needs kids received communion and confirmation. You should check with your parish priest and/or the religious ed dept. Generally, they're understanding and try to accommodate within reason. That's been my experience. Good Luck --- question about religious ed Date: Mon, August 06, 2012 10:58 am To: autism-georgia Has anyone sent their moderately impaired child to regligious ed classes at a Catholic Church? I'd like for my daughter to be able to receive the sacraments and I think she could participate (with help) in the classes. Does anyone know if the Church has a position on special needs kids and preparation for the sacraments? Thanks for any info!

Guest guest
Hi Andi! Our family is Lutheran - but some of our best friends are Catholic and teach Catholic education. I reached out to my girlfriend and here was her response for you:"I know that children with special needs recieve sacraments. There is a man with severe autism who attends mass with his mother and he takes communion. They should speak with their priest about getting her in preparation. We are baptized as infants and children receive reconciliation as young adults we are confirmed, as imperfect adults we marry, as failed humans we are called to religious life and as unhealthy beings we receive the graces of annointing of the sick. God does not ask for perfection just a willing and faithful heart. Who best to know this then a child. I am sure that this child will find the love and support in her parish. Let me know."Hope this helps!
