Guest guest
Hi Chris. Thanks so much for your reply. I completely agree with you. How did you get started homeschooling? How do you find curriculum materials and things like that and is it really expensive to do? The only two schools I've found out about so far are not something we can do (meaning, one of them is $25,000 a year). I can send you the info if you want it though. That's what I mean...public schools say they can help our kids so they won't have to pay private school tuition, yet they really don't have anyone trained to work with these kids! I am really having a rough time and am hoping some of you can help. I have been trying for quite a while to find someone who can do an evaluation on my youngest (8 years old). He has seen two different psychologists (private) and one said ADHD and the other one said Aspergers but never gave us anything in writing.. I believe and know in my heart that he has Aspergers Syndrome. We just finished a 6-week evaluation by a behavioral psychology specialist who also says Aspergers. Unfortunately, she is not technically a psychologist so she can't give a diagnosis. So what's the problem. Well, right now he has an EBD eligibility label at school because we don't have an "official" diagnosis of anything. Because he wasn't getting the types of support that were right for him, the behaviors got worse and he ended up at Alpine. There are lots of details here that I'm leaving out to try and keep this short. I need to have someone qualified, who knows what they're doing, evaluate my son. I'm trying to find a neuropsychologist who takes our insurance. I found a few and will start the calls in the morning. I don't think any public school is going to have the small group setting that he needs yet still giving him the academic challenges he needs. He is very smart and above grade level with academics. I feel frustrated and lost. It used to be part of my job to help other parents with stuff like this. So why am I not getting anywhere? I can't afford the private schools or special schools for children on the spectrum but, at the same time, I don't think public schools can help him right now. Thoughts? Ideas? Advice? Thanks!! Guest guest
Hey Debra. My son is not home school age yet, but it is a something I have thought about for a long time. I studided developmental psychology in school and learned that our current school programs are very archaic. They are meant to produce worker bees. They do not fit the child's natural ability for learning and creativity and are actualy geared towards like-minded thinking and such. Newer school models like Montessori are better equipped to handle the individual child and they're individual way of learning. There are like 10 different types of schools that I know of, not just Montessori. That is just the most recognizable one. As for how to start with home schooling, I have a few friends who do this and they recomend starting here: http://www.ghea.org/ for information and how to do it. Also, look on Yahoo groups and Facebook, any online group area for local groups. Some ppl use this just as a way of getting ideas, but my friends each have a speciality, and they take turns teaching different activites. Also, everywhere you go has home school potential, and probably curriculum sheets available. I know the Aquarium and the Children's Museum does. But anyplace like that does. Many ppl use vacations as learning opportunities too. I know some children's book company's have some stuff too. Like I'm affiliated w/Barefoot Books and they have some worksheets and stiff for teachers and home school. But I'm not sure if everyone has access to it or not. Then the PBS shows and Dpra and things like that also have some stuff too. Guest guest
Hello Ladies,You and your children are the reason I have been working for 2 1/2 years to start a private school for children with special needs (esp. Autism as my 16 y/o is diagnosed with it). If ANY parents are interested in helping with this please email me at tjbenn2000@.... I am a special ed teacher of students with autism and I know what is lacking and what works in public schools. I pray that we all find what we need for our children. Guest guest
Debra, I found this old email and wanted to update you. We did k12 for Zack, public school online. It takes a lot of time, but free! If you haven't check them out if you still want a different option. They are enrolling right now, you can start application online. All materials are given, course curriculum, elluminate live sessions, etc. It has been great. We may move our son to another school bc the social aspect needs work that only social situations can help but we're not decided yet. We may stay with K12. If you don't have a great eval yet I would suggest Dr. Weinstein in Marietta. She did Zack's and gave Asperger's, which we knew to be the case. Fee is 1600 I believe is what I paid for full psych and educ. eval which I'm sending into K12 bc they are public you can get speech, ot, social skills classes is alloted in IEP possibly easier than at your reg brick and mortar public school.
