These function-based strategies will allow parents to increase the likelihood of problem behaviors being reduced. This presentation will teach parents each step required to achieve problem behavior reduction. Parents will be taught to determine and prioritize the behaviors, and once the behaviors have been prioritized, tools for determining the function of the behavior will be taught. This will allow the parent to utilize proactive and reactive strategies with which they will be able to reduce the problem behaviors. Shilpa Kooken is a board certified behavior analyst with 10 years of experience with children and adults with developmental disabilities, including autism. She received a master’s degree in educational psychology from Georgia State University and completed her internship at Marcus Autism Center. Shilpa spent two years as the Clinical Director at an Atlanta-based school for children with Autism. She now works in a residential setting, Laurel Heights Hospital, helping students with intense behavior needs while also consulting for families, in-home, with Integrated Behavioral Solutions. When not directly working with children, Shilpa serves on the Georgia Association for Behavioral Analysis board and is a co-founder for Compass Solutions for Autism, a data collection company. Starting in June, Shilpa will join the Behavior Program Review Committee for the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.
