Social Role Valorization (SRV) WorkshopMarch 5 – 8,

2012Decatur, Georgia You are invited to attend a four-day Social Role Valorization workshop sponsored by the Georgia Advocacy Office. The GAO is inviting individuals who have either direct or indirect influence on the lives of people with disabilities. The ideas conveyed in this workshop will challenge even the most experienced among us to examine our beliefs, both consciously and unconsciously held, hopefully leading to positive changes in the lives of people with disabilities. People who are called by society’s negative labels such as “youth at risk,†“emotionally disturbed,†“developmentally disabled,†and “mentally ill†are actually being placed into negative social roles by unspoken consensus. The consensus and the negative roles can work together to keep people out of what is generally considered to be the good life. Advocates find that the dynamics at work may be extreme enough to cause great harm and eventually be deadly. In order to counter these forces, and not unconsciously contribute to them, advocates need a high level of awareness. Advocates also need practices aimed at establishing and maintaining positive social roles for people subject to all forms of exclusion. This workshop requires four days of working within a group to acquire skills in recognizing negative social roles and creating practices that support the development of positive social roles as part of good advocacy. The workshop time is divided between a lecture format in a classroom style setting, and personal reflection and conversation with a small group and group leader. It will require your full attention and a commitment to all four days. CEUs are available for Certified Peer Specialists. If you are interested in CEUs for
