Below, please find recent facts about Autism compiled from sources including the

National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

the U.S. Department of Education, and the Autism Society of America.

1 in 250 births to as many as 1 in 166 births

1 to 1.5 million Americans

10 - 17% annual growth

Growth comparison during the 1990s

- U.S. population increase: 13%

- Disabilities increase: 16%

- Autism increase: 172%

I have a problem with using the term " births " . My son was born normal and

was normal in every sense of the word until the age of 15-18 months.... Is

the term used by the CDC ...etc?

I would also suggest contacting SARRC, the Southwest Research and Resource

Center, in AZ and obtain a copy of the Friend Program. There is a brochure and

video that introduce autism to children and encourage them to be special friends

to our special kids.

Substitute " children " for " births " . Yes, this language is from the CDC, NIH,

etc.

That's standard public health language. That way when they talk about

mortality rates and people affected, it makes it more removed, more

dehumanized--distancing themselves from the real human cost of this problem.

I absolutely agree! But they don't want to admit that something happened along

the way...as we all know. Especially since the numbers are getting higher and

higher. Ya know?

My baby WAS a normal baby too. AGH!
