Hi everyone

Just posting to see what opinions are out there regarding naturopaths?

Have never tried one - don't really know that much about them - but

am interested in whether they might help, especially with supplement

advice and prescriptions.

Thanks for any info!

Cheers,

Kim

We saw a DAN who was also a naturopath. He was a very nice and caring man but only had a very basic knowledge of DAN interventions. We went to him 1x because we were looking for someone closer. While I liked him better than our DAN doc at that time, I knew my boys needed someone higher level. In the end, we ended up w/a DAN doc even further away than the original but we are satisfied so that's all that counts. I'm sure there are some great naturopaths ones out there. I think it's more about the individual's knowledge and background than their credentials. I know of a fabulous DAN nutritionist. However, if they are not a doc or a nurse practitioner, they cannot write an rx.

Hi Kim-

Naturopaths can be very good- excellent, in fact.

Just be careful, check their credentials, ask around...

If your state licenses Naturopaths, all the better.

Find out how complaints are lodged in your state against naturopaths

and check there, too.

What I have found very helpful with the way naturopathic medicine

works is that they don't simply look at the symptom and treat it.

Naturopathic medicine looks one step further at where the symptom is

coming from/what is causing it... and then treats that.

For us w/seizures:

Our neurologist gave us a prescription for an anti-seizure medication.

(After one abnormal EEG and no further testing, I was told over the

phone to go pick up a prescription for my daughter and was given the

advise: " Let me know if it makes her feel weird. " and no follow-up

appointment was offered. But that's all another story!)

We went for a second opinion, well, no, a 'second neurologist' after

that fiasco. And he, too, recommended medicating, but also set up an

MRI, Holter Monitor, and another EEG.

Our naturopath (who did NOT advise us to not use the medication- that

was our choice) is treating by modifying my daughter's diet and

providing supplements to boost the deficiencies (and reduce the

excesses) in my daughters blood chemistry (as well as treating with

NAET to elminate several food allergies- wheat/gluten is my daughter's

main offender causing the episodes).

5 months later: no seizures (except mild tremors when my daughter

mistakenly ate wheat) and the last EEG is much improved.

The neurologist totally changed his tune with the recent EEG. He

didn't go on a rampage like he did previously when I told him my

daughter would not be taking the medication for the time-being, that I

needed more answers and we were going the 'natural route' for now. (He

was livid! Oh, well.)

I can't begin to believe with just anti-seizure medication anything

would have gotten better. I have to believe as sensitive as my

daughter is to anything artificial, that she'd be a much sicker girl

today with 5 months of 3 times a day psychoactive chemicals assaulting

her system...

And, as a final note: even our Naturopath says that we still need

traditional/allopathic doctors. So, never completely rule them out-

just proceed with caution wherever you go!

Take care,

I couldn't resist commenting on this question, even though I'm biased.

The comments that have come back from this group so far have been good.

Since I am a Naturopathic Doctor, I'll add a couple of other cautions:

1. Probably the most important: ND's are not trained in the Biomedical

Approach. They are trained and often well-versed in the actual

treatments, but don't understand how to piece it all together.

Sometimes their efforts could do more harm than good. Often

naturopathic approaches without knowledge of the Biomedical Approach

won't offer you much at all.

That said, ND's who are trained in Biomedical (i.e. have gone for

DAN! training or similar) could be very helpful to you and your

family. Check that your ND has graduated from one of the accredited

colleges (Bastyr, National, Southwest or Bridgeport) AND that they have

trained in Biomedical. Start from there.

2. Some states do allow ND's to prescribe "drugs". However, I've been

working well with over 150 kids here in Canada and am getting good

results for families like yourselves without prescription medicines,

especially for antifungal and "chelation" treatments. Natural

medicines are effective, and can even offer some treatments that might

be more effective than prescriptions.

Hope that helps.
