Guest guest
Hi, I have been lurking today after being accepted as a member. You are all so wonderful and helpful and I cannot wait to become more active here. I want to start by giving my daughters bio and then list my questions. My 3 1/2 yo dd (pdd) has been receiving therapy since she was 32 months old. First from early intervention. Now from School. She has been receiving speech, ot, pt and is in an ABA classroom 5 days a week for 2 hrs 45 minutes. Since October she has been seeing a pediatric chiropractor regularly including cranial work (has greatly helped my dd's brain fluids move more freely. upon initial exam her brain fluids were sort of stagnant). They also help with finding the right supplements and guiding when adding new ones. =) We have rececived our formal diagnosis from a develpmental team of PDD-NOS. A nuerologist diagnosed Autism (she doesn't use PDD). We have a referral in three months to see a gastrenologist. Her poops are all over the place. Not diahreah not runny. Just sometimes mushy/loose. Sometimes they are regular. Some mornings in the last few months she just has a bowel burst after waking up. Full of mush and almost oozing out of her diaper. I have not been able to tell really if its one food in particular that causes it to be like that. One great thing we are waiting for the final approval.....my daughter has initially been accepted into the Autism Waiver program in the state of MA. Its a three year pilot program. She will receive up to $25,000 for services (more info best found on the MA/DMR website). its an awesome program where only 80 kids that applies out of thousands were accepted. We will know within the next three weeks!!! SOOOOO exciting. My daughter is considered high functioning. She has made amazing progress since August. She now has ALOT of eye contact. Responds to her name and sometimes to commands. She is a labeler. she does some echolalia. Has alot of words however cannot make sentences right now. She can sometimes put some words together like Mama Eat hungry. Mama see show....we are slowly making progress. In August she could not put two words together. one big area that needs work is playing with toys functionally. Its so hard for her to do a knob puzzle, mr potato head, building blocks. things like that but we do it every day to build her skills. At home I do alot with her.....alot learned from early intervention.... she recently ran to me when i picked her up from preschool...her first time!!!! she is very visual and has a great sense of humor. She has started playing with Little leaps game for the tv and actually responds to the commands to push the buttons to interact. this game really holds her attention. overall she is very loving. she really connects with her baby brother and older brother. she is obsessed with my computer so i am starting to look for some computer games for her besides fisher price online games that she is now bored with. (any suggestions? I see some at chilrens hospital boston website that look good) I am looking into videos. Right now she loves Braincandy and baby bumblee bee. (any suggestions? anyone use the teach2talk videos? or anything else?) Since august I have kept therapies isolated...sort of made sure there was a good enough space in between so I could see what really worked for her. I know GFCF works for her (now sleeps through the night..woohoo). I have tested some foods and have a list of some known food intolerances. I know supplements help her as I've seen the great improvements. I know chiro works for her. I would like to see improvement in the following areas: Hand biting/growling while doing it. scratching everyone when irritated. (was told zinc supplement might help this) Rocking especially in the car seat and highchair. Screaming when we get to a red light or stop in the car. lately gets irritated by the overhead light in the car when its on. would like to see better improvement in listening, speech, etc.. all the other usuall areas. stop looping words..like just saying the same thing over and over...bed, bed, bed even though when i do her request and take her there its not really what she wanted. Now I am ready to move on to more supplements. I have been watching your threads and trying to make sense of what new supplements I need. My 3 1/2 yo DD has autism/PDD-NOS is 3ft 1 " weighs about 35 lbs. I need to add supplements to these areas but have questions: 1. Natural Antifungal - Oregano Oil, Saccharomyces Boulardii or Candex ~How do you decide which one is best? I want the most natural one with least known side affects. Next what brand/seller would you recommend and what dosage? 2. Baterial: would Three-Lac fall under this? we are currently using that. 3. natural viral therapy: Olive leaf extract (OLE) - is this one good? how to administer? I have read some people post GSE is this grapefruit seed extract? What is that used for? I am very intersted in this supplement too. What order is best for giving all supplements? Here is what we give or will be giving once some trials arrive this week Mutli vitamin/ supernu thera trial is on its way cod liver oil (right now we are giving Nordic Naturals Artic cod liver oil...my dd doesn't seem to have a soy allergy. I have tested a few times and not seen any reaction but I have read that the e vitamin in the oil is from soy so i am not sure if I want to switch...hard decision as it was hard enough finding one that had the right dha-epa ratio i wanted). threelac (one packet a day ...was giving it in the am but read i should switch to pm) amino support by kirkman (awaiting trial size) EnZym-Complete II DPP-IV Isogest® Formula by Kirkamn (awaiting trial size) Kirkman's Hypoallergenic Zinc Capsules (Bio-Max Series) (awaiting order) Maybe I need more than what is listed but I'm not sure.LMK what you think. Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, I live in Andover, MA. Hand biting, yes, most likely zinc. The car light is probably because of the flickering and it’s so close to her eyes. She probably has vestibular issues to be crying at stop lights. Always wants the car to be moving, rocking her. Sensory integration might help this as well as food intolerance removal. The diet, and chiro/craino stuff is a great start but while you are moving into the supplement area the most important thing is starting one supplement at a time. Many kids are sensitive to certain supplements and in order for you to see which one is affecting her, at least a week in between is best. As for listening and speech, I’m still working on those myself, but for attention I have the best luck with OPC-3 which has pine bark extract, grapeseed extract, bilberry extract, etc also MB-12 injections help with attention. For speech my son has made progress with 3 things but still has a long way to go, 1st MB-12 injections, Valtrex/antifungal protocal, and DMG (in order to do DMG you need a sufficient amount of B6 in the system). For bacteria OLO is good for bacteria/fungal as well as Goldenseal. But most of these you do not want to use for long periods of time. Rotation and breaks are best with those. You also really need a good probiotic on board. I rotate Kirkman’s probio gold, and Klaire labs therbiotic. GSE (grapefruit seed extract) is an antifungal and antibacterial. Most important thing to remember is go slow and observe your child. Getting them tested by a DAN physician would really help you figure out where she is and how much yeast she may have as well as find out food intolerances and mineral imbalances. As for the computer, there are many online things she can do. PBS.org has a ton of games on there, so does Nick Jr. My son loves these and they are free. When she starts to be interested in letters and beginning phonics the best free website is www.starfall.com. I like the baby bumble bee videos as well. I know someone whose son started talking with one of them. He never said anything in sentence form and only a few words but after watching those videos he started saying “The girl is walking across the room” LOL!! One of my therapists is working with a little 3 yr old and using the teach to talk videos and it’s going really well. Concentrating on the gut first is your best bet! Guest guest
Hi We have a referral to see Dr. Bousvaros at Childrens Boston in March (pedi gi). Anyone familiar with him? I read another post where someone had a good experience with a Dr. (last name begins with F...blanking at the moment and cannot find the post) No DAN yet. I have to wait for our taxes to come back to afford it right now. Would love to hear recommendations. Any guidance is soo appreciated! Thanks! Bonnie > > Which GI physician are you seeing? Guest guest
Bonnie, My son is 5 now and was diagnosed at 3 yr, 9 mo. Your daughter sounds a lot like him...Super nu thera worked wonderfully for us, as did GFCF (later re-introduced casein with no probs) I'll be interested to hear what you think after you start super nu thera. For us, a lot of the sensory problems, especially the auditory, diminished greatly after about 2 weeks. and at about the same time, he called me mommy for the first time. (he was able to label me as mommy before, but never used it to get my attention) That was a great day. I wish you the same results! Best of Luck! Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, I took my son to Boston Children's GI - found them (along with other docs in neurology and genetics) not very supportive of biomedical . . .. I hope you have better luck. We have a great DAN doc in Northampton, MA who takes insurance. Dr. Darren Lynch: http://www.northamptonwellness.com/ Good luck!
