Guest guest
yes, PANDAS is associated with strep. sounds like your daughter has some autoimmune issues. You might want to do some more extensive testing on her There is a test for PANDAS-it frequently presents itself with OCD characteristics. Maurine Cornell wrote: Is there a website or a book recommended for info on PANDAS? Is it only related to Strep? My "NT" daughter was just diagnosed with ADHD. The thing is she goes in and out of behavioral episodes. We just finished a week of sheer torture with her. She has been completely oppositional, aggressive, hyper, impulsive and just plain spiteful. I would say it was a result of the the stress of the holidays but she goes through these episodes periodically. The last really bad one having been in August and September. She is always full of energy and has trouble maintaining attention but she is a well behaved child. When she has these episodes she is out of control and truly acts as if there is a serious mental health issue presenting itself. The thing is she has never had strep throat. My son and I had it last year and she had the same symptoms but never tested positive for it (they did a throat culture). They treated her with an atibiotic (5 day Z pack). She has been extremely sickly with allergies and stomach aliments this year. Every little germ that comes along goes into full blown illness with fever, diarrhea, vomiting, along with cold symptoms. There is so much to write about that I could go on forever. I would love to talk with someone experienced in PANDAS to give me a little information so I see if I am exploring the right path for my daughter. Thanks so much for your help. Guest guest
, I have more experience with PANDAS/PITAND than I'd like to admit. Just because your daughter didn't present with classic strep symptoms doesn't mean she didn't have a strep infection on board. My son has never been diagnosed with strep throat in his entire life but his titer levels would state otherwise. Formal information on PANDAS/PITAND is scant at best, but its improving. The NIMH does some clinical trials ( Swedo, MD) as does the Univ of FL ( , PhD). There's a yahoo group, much like this one, for PANDAS also. I think I heard recently that the Univ of Arizona is involved in some clinical research. First order of business is to assemble your information. Ask, request, demand, whatever it takes to get a ASO and antiDNAse B titers drawn on your daughter. The sooner the better. If they are off the chart, it will help make your point to your doc (who, unless it's a DAN!, will likely need convincing). Even if her titers are within range you may be dealing with a PITAND issue instead of classic PANDAS. In our case, my son's strep titers are through the roof but in the end, it's always a virus that trips up his immune system and completely upends our world. I have a trunk full of printed research on PANDAS/PITAND, any of which I'm happy to share. Educating yourself will help you to educate your doctors and distance yourself from those who don't want to learn. It's definitely not a time for blind faith on your part but I can tell you for certain that you'll piece it together and she'll improve greatly. I will be happy to help/listen in any way that I can. Feel free to email me off the group if you'd like. Best wishes, Gayle > Is there a website or a book recommended for info on PANDAS? Guest guest
Our NT daughter, four in Jan, went crazy on us not that long ago...wild mood swings, wrapping herself around objects and people, playing " cat " and licking people and laughing maniacally - and lots of tantrums etc....we pulled sugar, went modified SCD diet minus casein...we may try/allow goats milk yogurt soon, and severely restricted fruit. We put her on Diflucan and va;trex as a trial...her tongue remains coated and spotty - LOOK AT THE TONGUE - but it is better now two weeks into this trial...she wet her bed the first night - never does that - and her panties were full of yeasty discharge like a woman would have if there was a vag yest infection....no more cat games, no more licking, moods much more normal now - NIGHT AND DAY....though we are still not out of the woods as her tongue says she is still not right...she once again passes for NT to all except us....TRY ANTIFUNGALS ASAP and see what happens...cut out starches, sugars, and all milk for a bit...look Good luck....for us it is def yeast... > > Is there a website or a book recommended for info on > PANDAS? Guest guest
That sounds so much like how things started for us, except that it was exactly 5 days after a classic 24 hour virus. First time he was 9, took a very long time to get better, remissed as mysteriously as it came. He was never diagnosed during that episode. At age 11, another 24 hour virus (the first since the one at age 9) and 5 days later he woke up a different child. PITAND, is pediatric infection (or illness) triggered autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders. It was my recurring feeling that it was the virus that was the trigger that eventually lead me to this group. I have learned so much. Once I knew what to look for I could see he was overrun with yeast. Eventually got a DAN!, 45 days on Diflucan and he was so, so much better but we still had a way to go. He's so much better now, though there is residual behavior that wasn't part of his life before. Severe attention and focus issues. Impulsivity. All of it is exacerbated by the fact that he's almost 14, a rough time under perfect circumstances. Here's the encouraging part that helped me sleep on many nights. These kids tend to grow out of this as they age. I keep the visual in my head that everything I do to keep his gut healthy allows his immune system playing field to be leveled off, then nature and growth can take its course and permit him to have the life that was so abruptly interrupted for him (and us). Best wishes to all, Gayle > > > Is there a website or a book recommended for info on > > PANDAS? Is it > > > only related to Strep? > > > > > > My " NT " daughter was just diagnosed with ADHD. Guest guest
I'm deleting all the crap on my email...what about mold and giardia....my NT got nailed with both. They also wanted to give him another pheneummocal vaccine....drew the line at that. But (big kid) has broken out in a rash for the past two years in April (last april he got really sick after camping) and October. I think when the Giardia thing may have started 18-24 months ago (or when it became acute perhaps) all of the sudden he was HURLING some pizza and popcorn. Giardia does create a lactose intolerance and corn products send into pure gut hell...since they are molecularly similar... I don't know, I'm just a crazy mom learning that the suckers don't show up in tests...that's why some environmental docs/DANS just treat the symptoms...figure we got lucky when we showed up with 19 viles of poop and got sent home with 7 more (that does not include follow up tests or Genova tests...I even had to buy more dixie cups!!) We have a fecal fat one coming up this weekend....maybe we'll turn something up. lisa PANDAS INFO? Is there a website or a book recommended for info on PANDAS? Is it only related to Strep? Guest guest
Thanks Cheryl...that's on the radar, it's presenting more as a mold/fungus/parasite issue, but I did pull a black tick out of his leg 5 years ago--no rash, but that doesn't mean anything. We're working through the lymes thing...I got a questionable result (got the letter the dr. was supposed to send to board of health--nice huh!) and did lots of Quest tests which I don't trust--so my globally delayed kid and I are in the clear according to Quest. Got a good lab you like for lymes? Just got a script for little guy for IGeneX labs from the DAN but if I'm going to do it on one, I should definately test the kid who got the bite! thanks for the push...Can't even tell you how many doctors I've asked to test us on this... Need some scoop...little one is a mess in the yeast/bacteria department on the OAT test. Redoing the test this week, but his 3-oxoglutaric was REALLY high and I've googled it, but I still don't understand what that byproduct represents as a "nasty thing". Would colostria, aribinose and this 3-oxo(sp)mess up his fatty acid metabolism (the other big problem besides eosinophilic GI (and sinuses) "diagnosis"--he's just had a good scope after treating for parasites with wormwood, black walnut...and my eosinophils were VERY during pregnancy (so I got too my ibuprofin and the prednisone--nothing like throwing gas on the fire!)...now my NT kid has the same high eosinophils in the blood...but he got a positive back on Giardia (they don't do poop tests on pregnant moms...just steroids!) sorry about the way all that just came out...i gotta run, time just slips away on this board! Guest guest
Very.  I can't say enough good things but I will tell you that Dr. G is not the easiest person to get along with as he has *very* strong opinions.  If you see him, you really have to learn to just smile and nod when you don't agree.  He's very passionate about what he does and helping our kids so that does help make up for his strong opinions and ego.  Yes, he has a *huge* ego - everyone else is doing it wrong according to him.   But overall, he's a very nice, compassionate man that truly does care.cherylI read looked into that site...and I'm lucky...it's not far!! Our biggest beast is yeast (and then some). Is it going well? PANDAS INFO?Is there a website or a book recommended for info on PANDAS? More new features than ever. Check out the new AOL Mail!
