my son couldn't blow or use a straw either direction until L-carnitine due to low tone from not breaking down protiens and fats to MAKE muscle so his body was in a constant state of catabolism where the body lives on it's mucles for amino acids......pancreatic enzymes break protien and fats down to be used. is he low tone? is so looking at a taurine, pancreatic enzymes and carnitine combo might be a good thing to look at. the brain can't function with EFA's which he would be low in if he has this issue. folapro is an already broken down folonic acid. even more of a simple form for absorption, we tried both folic and folonic with out help as well. LDN, with b12 nasel and folapro was one of our HUGE jumpers in skill, they each gave something but in combo they were a force I was SOOO impressed with. with the sounds and lose and gains have you looked into landau kleffner. it's a night seizer disorder that is discribed as kids that loose and gain skills, the sounds them selves could be siezers as well. have you had an EEG done? it doesn't always catch them! they didn't get our sons but ours are gluten triggered. watch and see what is happening before these sounds and look for a pattern

Recovering from Autism is a marathon NOT a sprint, but FULLY possible! Read more about it on my Blogs athttp://www.myspace.com/christelking

---Oh My G-d! I just finished reading your post. It is my life.An exact carbon copy. I am in a similar position with the onlydifference that I am able to get my son to eat more foods. we started the GFCF diet in July. My husband was willing to give it 9months. We had gone to a DAN dr. and after two years my husband wasfinally on board. We have seen these glimpes of what is possible butthen have a backlash of bad days, new stimming behavior, morewithdrawn and I truly feel like my time is running out. I continue toquestion what went well on that one day and what didn't go well on theothers, Was it the specific supplements-are they working. My son too has dark circles under his eyes. I look at him and amworried and keep asking myself, what am I doing and will he ever getbetter. I don't know how much more of a restricted diet I can do for my son. I don't have any answers for you. I am still searching myself. I guess I wanted you to know that there is someone else whounfortunately has had an experience too similar to yours. Even withthe difficulty getting pregnant. Thanks for your post. AIT has been suggested to us by one of his doctors as well. Problem is no one in my area offers this type of therapy. I'd have to travel 2.5 hours out of town for one session and I have been quoted prices that I cannot afford, that are not covered by our already too expensive insurance!

Keep me posted on your son's progress.

Just so you know, there are home AIT programs.  Try www.vitallinks.net (Therapeutic Listening).  There are several others too, like The Listening Program and Samonas.  My son has done TL and is now on Samonas.  We haven't done TLP but my sil uses it in her learning lab.CherylThanks for your post.  AIT has been suggested to us by one of his doctors as well. I am new here but I had to respond to this. My son is three and is also nonverbal. This is harder on me than all the stimming ever was. I look at him and it seems like he should just be able to look at me and just speak. We have been getting vocalizations and even had a few random words (but used correctly) since starting SCD. Before that he refused to even try to speak because he was so frustrated. I have heard that listening therapy could help but I also can't afford it. I am hoping to get to a DAN doctor soon. This is when I just want to cry because we don't have the money to do everything out there we can to help my son and daughter.(She is verbal but has a lot of echolalia.) Parents just should not have to go through everything we all go through with our kids. And our kids should not have to suffer like this.

What is LDN?? I haven't heard that before.

All the stories I her of people recovering their kids is what keeps me going on the bad days. I know this can be done. And even though my kids have far to go-they have come pretty far already. These boards are so wonderful. I don't know where I would be without the internet!

My son will shake his head yes and no. When I ask him (which I do daily or more) to just say "mama" (which I've heard him say in the past...even as a vocal stim mamamamamama) he shakes his head no. If I persist with him, he shakes his head no even more adamantly, gets upset and pushes me away like he can't stand me even asking him to say something. I really feel like he thinks he cannot do this and it frustrates him so badly. I want to scream.

My son can also make some sounds and word approximations like no, hi, hi Dad, nine & ten. However, he never repeats them after we try to get him to say them. They are usually appropriate and in context but initiated on his own. While it saddens me that he does not repeat when I try to get him to, especially when I KNOW he can make the sound, I feel like at least maybe when he does start talking, it will not be rote (just repeating what he hears on videos, others say, etc.), but meaningful and self-initiated. Maybe I am just fooling myself but at least it keeps me from getting depressed about it!

That is what my son would do. It hurts so much to see them so frustrated. I also ask all the time for him to say mom, mama,ma-anything that would mean me. He has said it a few times as a popout. But what I wouldn't give to hear him say that one word!

Re: My son is unwell and it's so hard to watch

I g uess I wanted you to know that there is someone else whounfortunately has had an experience too similar to yours. Even withthe difficulty getting pregnant. I lay in bed for 6 months to have myson. He was our dream come true. Now I feel like my dream is fadingaway and I am so worried what lies ahead.I don't sleep very wellanymore and spend most of my time thinking about what I can do....I sometimes feel like I'm neglecting my younger daughter and I knowI'm neglecting my marriage and myself.Well-I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone.JoyIn mb12 valtrex , ann andress wrote:>> Look into SCD special carbohydrate diet-- website ispecanbread.com-- my son was a carbo craver and the sugar feedsyeast--- i started with SCD and kept GF CF and it does help heal thegut better and recently started supplem ents slowly after being SCDdiet-- very healthy-- read about it ..yahoo group is pecanbread.comand many parents are here to support....your child will get betterwith these efforts-- 13 years ago my son did not have all thisinformation but i wish we had -- now slowly getting better --slowly...but you are doing a great job and you dont want to look backand regret you didnt try more...keep going...every little bit helps! > > Zurama wrote: Your post made me cry. That's how I felt when Mickie was that old and> saw him slip away and could't stop it.> > But your are doing all the right things early. I have not had the money to go to a DAN yet to start the B shots. I am hoping to get there soon though. I had given him a liquid vitamin with DMG. He did good with it but no language leaps. Maybe I will try that again. so far diet changes have been the only thing to lead to speech improvement. I never would have believed that was connected! I do flash cards with him--he loves them. They actually helped get his sister talking. He will look at his picture books and try to say the names of what is on the pages. You can actually hear what he is trying to say-he may get out a sound or two. But it is also so sad to see him struggling like that. And he won't do it if he knows I am listening. It really is heartbreaking. But at least he is trying now. So he must know the progress he has made. I'll have to give the DMG a try again on it's own. Thanks for mentioning that!

The most helpful thing for language in our house has been the

strategies from Overcoming Autism the book by the Keogals of Santa

Barbra. It is Pivotal Response THeory stuff and an easy read. They

do not believe - or at any rate base any of their work- on biomed or

diet changes....which MEANS, if you chosses to look at it the way I

did that they get kids like ours talking without the steps that I

think are so crucial...so their strategies must be pretty good bc I

think every s9ingle kid out there with autism nees biomed and diet

changes of some sort.....and yet....this book got Matt talking and

within four days. Torture for the first four days that it took to

get him to say " more " - that was three weeks ago...the noises and

sounds just keep coming now. I am SO impressed with their strategies

and I am not the only mom who has had success...I got the book bc a

friend whose sone was FAR more affected and nonverbal began speaking

within two months of working with the Keogals?PRT staff. Wow. We

all thought this kid might never talk, and he got speech before eye

contact and other things that often come first.....

Give it a go. Matt goes through the house calling Daddy these days -

from ahppple and ba and jargon three weeks ago! He says mommy now

too, but that takes prompts....I have to put atowel over my head and

only pull it off when he says MOMMY as a game...or if he really

really wants something and I promt it he will say mommy. I will take

it though.......give their book a read through and see if their

methods click with you. Matt's speech teacher is tearing up all his

goals for the year and writing new ones as of yesterday. Today in

therapy we all just sat there mesmerized as she pulled card pic after

card pic and he either said the word...bel, ooorunge, tick tock,

meow, woof woof and so on...not alwys the right word but the right

animal noise or the right sort of sounds in the word....spoon, hat,

baby...WOW! Let me know if anything happens on your end...I owe you

bc berberine is helping alot at our place I think....Di

I will definitely check out the book. Thanks!

Re: My son is unwell and it's so hard to watch

The most helpful thing for language in our house has been the strategies from Overcoming Autism the book by the Keogals of Santa Barbra. It is Pivotal Response THeory stuff and an easy read. They do not believe - or at any rate base any of their work- on biomed or diet changes....which MEANS, if you chosses to look at it the way I did that they get kids like ours talking without the steps that I think are so crucial...so their strategies must be pretty good bc I think every s9ingle kid out there with autism nees biomed and diet changes of some sort.....and yet....this book got Matt talking and within four days. Torture for the first four days that it took to get him to say "more" - that was three weeks ago...the noises and sounds just keep coming now. I am SO impressed with their strategies and I am not the only mom who has had success...I got the book bc a friend whose sone was FAR more affected and nonverbal began speaking within two months of working with the Keogals?PRT staff. Wow. We all thought this kid might never talk, and he got speech before eye contact and other things that often come first.....Give it a go. Matt goes through the house calling Daddy these days - from ahppple and ba and jargon three weeks ago! He says mommy now too, but that takes prompts....I have to put atowel over my head and only pull it off when he says MOMMY as a game...or if he really really wants something and I promt it he will say mommy. I will take it though.......give their book a read through and see if their methods click with you. Matt's speech teacher is tearing up all his goals for the year and writing new ones as of yesterday. Today in therapy we all just sat there mesmerized as she pulled card pic after card pic and he either said the word...bel, ooorunge, tick tock, meow, woof woof and so on...not alwys the right word but the right animal noise or the right sort of sounds in the word....spoon, hat, baby...WOW! Let me know if anything happens on your end...I owe you bc berberine is helping alot at our place I think....Di> > >> > > He has been on the following since Jan 7th. Maybe you could break it down into even smaller

steps, like asking him to make the mmmm sound.

If he resists this, try getting him to press his

lips together. Then celebrate any progress and

try and build on it.
