Guest guest
Don't get employees, get a great EMR. These at their best, I recomend eMDS allow quick refills and labs. It tracks labs. If I do a lab at a visit, I usually call them, but if it is a physical and the results are abnormal, you can bring them back for a paying couseling visit to discuss lipids or what ever. Prior auths occur only infrequently here, but I just call the number and make the request, takes about 2 minutes. No reason to spend $30+ k a year for someone to do this for you. ________________________________ From: on behalf of atticus0903 Sent: Mon 1/7/2008 7:52 PM To: Subject: Refills, Lab results and prior auths Thanks in advance as I'm sure these issues have been addressed before but as I am new to this listserve.... I'm going to start a solo practice within the next year and am trying to figure out the best/most efficient way to deal with refill requests/lab result queries and prior auths. I will start out with maybe one employee or maybe none and at the practice I am currently at these issues are poorly managed. Any ideas out there for a fledgling solo practitioner? Would appreciate any input. Thanks Marilyn Spiegel M.D Westchester, NY

Guest guest
To summerize the thoughts in this list serve...don't do anything for free that you can be paid for. Give enough refills to last until you'd like to see the person for a recheck. With same day/ next day scheduling, when someone calls for a refill, they get their f/u appt instead and soon learn to make the appt without calling for refills. For preauthorizations, either have the patient do the legwork or bring them in for an appt and do the preauth with them there in front of you. You get paid (for co-ordination of care time based) and the patient gets to experience the hurdles firsthand. I personally do these on my cellphone's speakerphone so the patient gets to hear the questions as well as answer them with me. Remember, bring the patient into the process and they will be your best advocate.
