the Dunkin' Donuts egg white wrap is also a really good one in terms of

calories, fat & grains.

Isn't an Egg McMuffin with ham, egg and cheese a decent breakfast?

It's not that it's huge in calories (300) but 5g saturated fat, 235mg

cholesterol (78% of your daily value), 840mg salt (OMG) What about the fact

that it is certainly missing the all important veg/fruit or proper dairy? (I'm

sorry that cheese isn't even readl cheddar) I really think you could do a lot

better by making one for yourself at home. Or trying one of the egg white

versions somewhere else. It is worth getting up early for a good breakfast

because it just might be the difference between a binge or a non-binge day.

That being said, I think you would be better off with a bowl of cereal.

I've made my own at home (use a well washed tuna can with the lid & bottom

removed to make the egg in so its round & fits the muffin!) and they freeze

really well -- so when you have one of those days when you're running late, you

just grab a baggie from the freezer & microwave for less than 2 minutes and you

have 'road food' or you can carry it to work & eat there ... you know at that

point that you've got a high fiber muffin or wrap, real cheese, maybe an omega 3

egg or organic egg, etc.

GREAT idea with the washed tuna can.  I have often wondered how I could get

that

round egg the way the restuarants do.  Also, great idea on the grab and go

bfasts.  I will have to make some of those up for Hubby and I.

my method of 'madness' - toast the english muffin, put the cheese on one side

after it's hot out of the toaster (so it will melt a little & stick to the

muffin, put the canadian bacon on the other side of the muffin and then the

" tuna " egg goes in the middle ... you want to let them cool (this keeps out the

ice crystals better) about 10 minutes, then I wrap in a paper towel or napkin &

place in a ziploc bag (squeeze the air out as you seal the bag) and freeze .. I

usually make 4 or 5 at one time (that's how many of those rings I can get in my

12 " cast iron skillet!) and they're good for at least a month ..  I always nuke

them in the napkin they were wrapped in as it absorbs some of the moisture on

the way into the freezer & helps to keep it in the muffin when you're

re-heating.

if you're into just the protein, canadian bacon is pretty low fat wise (compared

to regular bacon or sausage) and can made a 'thin sandwich' when the tuna can

egg is put between two slices (I'm doing those these days)

I tried to freeze home-made breakfast muffins before, but I must not have

wrapped them correctly. I used wax paper and the eggs got all

discolored...blech.

I like the tuna can idea, though!

Eldred,

this would be food that would make me feel like NOT riding my bike ... I know on

days that I go to the gym, I think my lunch choices much more 'carefully' as

part way through the workout that night, I'm either feeling like I've got lead

in my stomach (not a good lunch choice) or like I'm going to finish strong (a

much better lunch choice).  Actually, going to the gym has had a really

positive effect on my eating habits since I started correlating how I feel in or

after class to what I ate that day!

if you're visually motivated - have you ever thought about laying out a calendar

or grid on your fridge at home & in your cube at work -- one that ends with your

big 300 mile ride and if you go backwards on that calendar, filling in the miles

you need to get in each week in order to be ready for the ride??  would seeing

that staring back at you each day help to motivate you (whether it's to make

better food choices or to ride more often or longer)??  It's like crossing off

the days as they speed by as well ... or would riding or training with one of

the people on your team motivate you to keep it up?  I know my gym times are

class times and other people are there, so when I don't show up on my 'usual'

days - the next time I see them, they comment on either what happened or where

were you or we missed you -- those help to motivate as well!

I know every Sunday when I look at the calendar for the upcoming week (you know,

is there a haircut or dr. appt for me, is the car going in or a vet appt for the

dogs that I need to work around) - that's when I write down my workout schedule

on the calendar - so I'm actually planning those days as if they were the same

type of appointment (I don't break dr. or dentist or haircuts, why treat myself

any differently?) and I know I feel better after working out -- so I make sure I

get at least 4 sessions in every week - it's harder for me the screw up food

wise when I'm at the gym at least every other day!

what works for you that will make a difference?

My Mc's breakfast is usually the 2 burrito meal with a medium Coke. I

figured it out before, and it's about 966 calories. I don't remember the

sodium/cholesterol. I've been going to bed later this week than I was a couple

of weeks ago, so I'm a little burnt out when the alarm goes off in the morning.

I don't think I've ridden my bike this week eithere(can't remember if I rode

Monday or not). I need to get back to that at least.

Eldred,

What if you got the same breakfast but a small coke? (Or just water, but hey,

let's not go overboard!! LOL!) Same goes for any meal where you're having

coke--whether it's Mc's or home.

Seems like a simple change you can make without worrying about the commute, your

schedule, sitting at the table.... And it could really add up over time.

I ride by myself at 5am(when I actually get up<g>), so it would be

very difficult to ride with someone else. I need to average about 20

miles a day to get my 800 miles in by July 28th. 20 miles would take

me about 1.5 hours, so I'd have to get up at like 4:30am. There's a

local club that does evening rides of 25-30 miles on Wednesdays and

Fridays, but their pace is much faster than mine so I've been scared

to join them. I want to ride Friday just to see how long I can hang

with them before I collapse... :-)

Still working on that... I did great 2 weeks ago, and ok last week.

This week, I haven't been on the bike yet. I'll see how many miles on

the trainer I can do while watching SG-1.

I like the cake pan idea!  now that you've said that, I'm thinking a cupcake

pan might work out well too!!  you'd just have to grease it well -- or maybe

use some of those silicone cupcake liners!

I haven't tried it, but I've heard from friends that the turkey sausage is good

(like they said they couldn't tell the difference) and it would have to be lower

in fat if not calories.

I find if I eat stuff I don't enjoy, it's a lot easier for me to break & fall

off the wagon (or even go under the wheels!) -- so I personally would prefer

something that tasted good, that I really wanted to eat and skimp on something I

didn't care about as much about (like if I loved the sausage, I'd have it and

skip the cheese or I'd eat the sandwich open faced or something like that).  I

want meals that I look forward to!

I take a Nalgene bottle of water to work, so I'm getting at least

32oz. most days. I could do without the Mcd's breakfast if I got up

in time to eat at home(and actually had something TO eat). My last

couple of times getting the fast food breakfast was because I got up

late. I had been up late Monday(Tuesday?) dealing with a problem at

work. I'm on call this week... :-(

Once I get back to breakfast at home, that part should be easier. I'm

thinking about quitting drinking pop for July. I still have to get

past the 'water is boring' mindset.

Given the name brands for turkey sausage (Jennie-O, Jimmy Dean, Brown-n-Serve

and Butter Ball are four national brands that come to mind when talking Turkey

Sausage), I'd think most all of the national chains would carry them - some

would be in the freezer case of the grocery store and at least one (locally here

it's Jennie-O & ButterBall) should be in the meat case (fresh)

if you try them, let us know what you think!

While I'm not crazy about sausage for breakfast, I think it might be really

tasty on a pizza!
