Guest guest
Hey gang, Like probably a lot of people, I'm an afternoon/night eater. I used to think it was because of skipping meals earlier in the day, but now I always eat breakfast and lunch and still find that I'm pretty ravenous once 3pm rolls around. I know that it's good to be a little bit hungry between meals, but I'm always SO hungry (I get a rumbly tummy and today I got a headache, which for me is often triggered by hunger). I usually have a piece of fruit or some yogurt as an afternoon snack, but I find that even a snack doesn't cut it sometimes. Anybody have any suggestions? I do wonder if it's psychological because I'm used to eating more later in the day.
Guest guest
Are you eating enough at breakfast and lunch? Would it help to have a mid-morning snack? I tend to do best with three main meals and two snacks. Some people do best if they eat every 2-3 hours, less each time. Some people do better if they eat three big meals. Maybe adding a little more in the morning would help with the afternoon. It also might be that a fruit OR a yogurt just isn't enough. I tend to have a fruit AND yogurt for a snack, and sometimes something else as well. Another thing to look at, besides how much you're eating, is what you're eating. I tend to do better with a fairly high %age of fat in the mornings. Like peanut butter or sesame paste with my oatmeal, and then maybe rice cakes and peanut butter for a snack. How do you feel if your breakfast is high carb? How do you feel if it's high protein? Does one keep you going longer than the other? It can be hard to trust hunger signals--assuming it must be psychological even if your stomach is growling. But really, that's a pretty good sign of hunger.... What if you try trusting yourself for a week or two, and see how you feel? Guest guest
I'm with on the AND part of an afternoon snack -- I've found through experimentation, I need a high protein and /or fat snack for the afternoon to keep me from having the 'slump' or being so starving that I overeat at dinner. my afternoon snacks are things like  - a few thin slices of chicken or turkey wrapped around thin slices of avocado  - little bit of almond butter on apple slices  - hard boiled egg with a bit of beef jerky  - bars (fruit & nuts)  ________________________________ To: " insideoutweightloss " <insideoutweightloss > Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2011 11:57 AM Subject: Re: Afternoon Munchies  Are you eating enough at breakfast and lunch? Guest guest
Well put ! I had to experiment quite a bit till I found out that I really need two snacks between lunch and dinner, because there's quite a lot of time between them (I take lunch at 11:30 and dinner at 18:30 hrs). I eat a handfull of unsalted almonds or mixed nuts at 14:00 hrs and a banana or two kiwi fruit at 16:00 (the other way around it somehow doesn't feel as good/comfortable). It's a matter of balancing out your nutrients during the day, trust your body to tell you what it needs at what moment of the day. Guest guest
Do you have any limiting beliefs about how much you " should be eating " at meals? What level of hunger do you eat and, and what level to you stop at?  Do you get movement during the day as to burn what you eat in the morning? What's wrong to eat when your stomach is giving you hunger signals?  I'm not sure if the clock is a super powerful tool in assessing my hunger... it might help me in the short run develop good patterns, but I know there is a better way. I've experienced a better way.  ________________________________ To: " insideoutweightloss " <insideoutweightloss > Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2011 2:43 PM Subject: Re: Afternoon Munchies  Well put ! Guest guest
Thanks for the tips. I guess I have some experimenting to do before I get things right. I'm pretty sure I'm eating enough at breakfast. I usually have a bowl of porridge with an apple and on Sundays I treat myself to scrambled eggs with lox and hash browns, but it's possible that I need to re-evaluate lunch, which is usually a smaller meal. Anyway, you all gave me some helpful ideas, and I guess I just have to play around with it a bit and find what works for me. Thanks! ________________________________ To: " insideoutweightloss " <insideoutweightloss > Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2011 7:43 PM Subject: Re: Afternoon Munchies  Well put ! Guest guest
sarah, I find that I get really hungry too in the afternoon...hungry as in all out starving sometimes. I used to " overeat " with my snacks and then feel guilty and then throw in the towel and start snacking on sweets. But then I realised that I needed to come up with a plan that I could feel comfortable with...that I could live with. I have found that the best solution for me is to have a big snack at around 4-4.30. I take it with me wherever I go! I make sure to include some protein, fat and lots of times something sweet too. So it might be half a sandwich (turkey, cheese, lite mayo, tomato, lettuce, sprouts) and some dates and a few almonds or half a peanut and a teaspoon of jelly on brown bread or a small bowl of cereal with a few almonds and/or raisons or a boiled egg and spicy peppers and a few yummy crackers, then a few dates and a few nut or plain yogurt with a tbsp of sunflower seeds and half an apple.) You get the idea...it's a filling snack! but still doesn't add up that much calorie wise and I usually have a smaller dinner cause I'm not so hungry anyway and even have room for a small snack after dinner if necessary. I think that you have to figure out when your body needs food and work around that. Good luck!
