I'm a bit younger, but I had a total hysterectomy at 46 because of cancer. I've

been paying $30/month for a gym that I have ben to 3 times in the last 2 years.

I love yoga, but can't seem to get off my but to do it. So now I'm also paying

for a chiropractor because the lost flexibility is resulting in a seized back.

It was so bad that I was losing feeling in my toes. so now the chiropractor has

become my yoga director, telling me the stretches and strength building

exercises that I should be doing. I'm at about a 50% success rate with doing

that. But I am encouraged by the fact that I can feel my toes again. I've

stopped paying for a gym membership, and I have strong aversion to going to and

paying for another doctor. So maybe this is how I will get back on track. It

looks doubtful to me because I'm not very good at being loyal to towards

motivators, which it's what staying on track would take.

I assume that some of this sounds familiar.

Marcia,

Is 60 old enough for you? I not only struggle with weight, but the effects of

aging. I have had a knee replacement, two hip replacements, etc. There are

exercises I cannot do because of this, but there are many more that I could, but

I just don't.

I too went through some difficult times, like divorcing my husband of 29 years

because of uncontrolled bipolar disorder (his, not mine) and emotional and

psychological abuse.

Unlike you, I was chubby at the age of 5, but a normal weight before that. I

don't know what happened at that time, but it has only gotten worse over the

years.

I know intellectually what I need to do, but for some reason I don't do it. I'm

hoping the podcasts and this group will help me figure that out. Is this weight

like a warm blanket that makes me feel safe an warm? I am getting the book from

the library to see if that helps, too.

I am 53 so older is me.

I am delivering newspapers with my youngest son 3 days a week and considering

adding a second route so I am going 6 days. That is my excuse for getting of the

computer. I avoid the couch because TV is bad for me.

I am taking a semester off from teaching, and I am having trouble tearing myself

away from the TV. My husband MUST have it on when he is in the house, but now I

have it on during the day, too. I really have to break this habit. There is

NOTHING worth watching during the day. I need to find some daytime activities

that will take me out of the house, yet not cost any money--no teach, no

paycheck!

Yes! It is very familiar! I have joined the Y on and off, but I go a few times

then drop off. I'm working through 's podcasts on exercise motivation, and

I did set up my aerobic step and put some other fitness gear in plain sight so

maybe I'll remember to fit exercise in to my day. Right now I'm not even working

this semester, and I STILL won't do it. I keep thinking, " I'll do something

after blah-blah-blah " then I never do it. I feel like a lazy blob, yet I know

that I have the ability and equipment to fix that--WHY WON'T I???

DeDe,

That all sounds familiar! I still have all my joints, but I'm too fat to do the

yoga that I loved, or even keep up with a class at the Y. Going back to the

podcasts is helping some, but I need to be more patient.

I was wondering too what the weight was doing for me. I was watching an episode

of Hoarders this morning, and I wondered if my weight was like " body clutter. "

Just like the hoarders, I know that I need to get rid of it, that life will be

better without it, yet I'm overwhelmed and a little scared about doing the work

to release it. I keep thinking that there will be a day when I get up and want

to exercise and be active all day, and only eat small, healthy meals. Then I'll

use all the videos and stuff and get myself in shape. Now that I'm in my 60's, I

know that I don't have all the time in the world any more. I need to get going

on this! I can't think of an advantage to keeping all this weight on, but I

think that is the key to managing my relationship with food and exercise.

Marcia,

Our age is just a number, just like the number that looks back on the scale...

do not use it as a negative.. after all, you have more years to determine what

is and is not working for you!

I am 55 and have the same problems with motivating myself to exercise. It is

the black/white thinking problem.. if I don't think I am eating well, then the

ole negative inner critic says to me " why bother? " going to the fitness center

since you know you are having a " fill in the blank " (big weekend, big dinner,

leaving for a vacation, blah blah).

What I want to do is celebrate my small successes in the food portion of my

behavior and keep them totally separate from the exercise. Because of terrible

knees and therefore total lack of strength in my quads (from babying my knees)

the types of exercise I enjoy, I cannot do. I have been fairly good about going

to do the exercises I learned at physical therapy recently, but as soon as I

take off a few days - BOOM - the same old negative self-talk comes back.

I am on week 2 of the Full Filled class, so I think this week will touch on more

of this. I sure hope so. I am going to spend tomorrow rereading my Chapter 1

exercises, do the guided meditation and then start week/chapter 2.

We all have this within ourselves to do this!! Let's go!

I'm only in my 30s, but being really close to 300 lbs, I've always

considered myself " too fat for yoga " too. I actually found a couple

fantastic classes at my Y, ball yoga and modified yoga. Both have mainly

older folks, but they welcomed me right in :) My knees and my back are

awful because of all this weight, but I can do these. They are made for

people who aren't in the best shape. There's also a yoga video called

" Just My Size Yoga " and I do that at home sometimes too.

You can still do yoga! I swear!

The other thing you might want to look for is Tai Chi. The same smooth,

flowing movements, focus on breathing, but not all the bendy poses. Just

some ideas for you :)

Marcia, I used to be a stay at home mom with a husband. Not a good relationship,

but thats another story. I really just could not take me time when they were all

home. So those precious moments when I got the house to myself became " spa

time " . It was like stepping into another dimension. I would plan in advance what

I would do with the next spa time. When it came, I would go put on my spa

clothes (from the thrift store) do my exercise have a very nutritious snack, and

then do something like paint my toenails or do a face mask.

Just a thought, don't see it as just exercise, make it yours, and schedule it as

part of your week.

Back to my inability to complete things,I finished chapter one over a week ago

and haven't started chapter 2. So, Judy, lets do this together. I'll do the

guided meditation tonight and start ch.2 tomorrow.

Lets get this done!

Judy,

I don't think of my age as a negative, nor did I mean to be exclusive, it's

just that older folks do have some specific issues that I thought we could

discuss in a thread that might not interest younger followers. I know that

menopause left me with a whole bunch of new weight and fitness issues that I

never dreamed I would have ot face. : (

I share your knee and quad issues. I could not do a lunge to save my life! I

also realize that I have no core strength. I was on the floor with my grandbaby,

and I COULD NOT sit up!!

I started week 2 as well. I am having trouble coming up with an " objection " to

getting my dream body. I'm going to go back to the beginning podcasts to see if

' spent some time on that. I think I need one of her guided meditations!!!

I've been working on her podcasts on exercise motivation this week because I

know that my weight is piling on because of my sedentary lifestyle.

Thanks for your support and encouragement!

Take good care

Marcia

Let's go!

Judy

a,

I teach remedial writing at our community college. I started out teaching 7th

grade English back in the '70's. I love my job and hated to take time off, but

our department's enrollment drops drastically for Spring semester, so I decided

to let some of the younger instructors take my classes so that they wouldn't be

strapped. Adjunct teaching does not supply the most dependable income.

I'm actually missing it already!

Take good care

sometimes too.

I took yoga at the Y where we lived ten years ago and had the best teacher! She

showed each of us exactly how to do the poses, no matter what size or shape or

physical condition we were in. The Y in my current town has terrible yoga

teachers. One of them keeps her eyes closed all during the class, and this is a

chair yoga class for old people!! I looked around and knew that some of these

folks were going to get hurt because no one was watching them to be sure that

they were aligned correctly. Needless to say, there was no OM in that class for

me! The other class they have at our Y is done in a dark room, where again, the

instructor does her own workout, but never comes around to correct alignment or

offer individual suggestions. And, because it was dark, we could hardly see what

she was doing. It was like doing yoga with an audio recording. Ugh.

There are a couple videos called Heavyweight Yoga that I have and do from time

to time. My problem is that I have a medium skeletal frame, so my joints,

especially my knees and hips, are in danger in a lot of poses because of the

extra 70-80 lbs. I carry around.

I do several Tai Chi and Qigong workouts I do to keep me balanced. I love

them.

Thanks so much for your support and encouragement! I love this group!!

Take good care

Marcia

Thanks, a!

It occurred to me today that I have lived my life on " school time " since I was

six years old. Now that I am off, I don't know how to schedule my time! I'm

going to sit down and work that out this week, and make a plan for every day.

I'm lost because I have so little to do!! I live with my husband of 40 years and

our grown son who is here temporarily between work locations.  All I have to do

is basic cleaning, laundry, and fix dinner.  Other than that, I'm on my own.I

know that other group members will scream at that, but it's not all you dream

it would be. I told a working friend of mine that I'm going to start a blog

called, " From My Sofa: Living the Life You THINK You Want. " I really need

direction in my life so that I can accomplish something while I have all this

time. I know that this will change at some point, and I will regret that I

didn't use this time wisely.

Take good care

Marcia

Marcia, I used to be a stay at home mom with a husband. Not a good relationship,

but thats another story. I really just could not take me time when they were all

home. So those precious moments when I got the house to myself became " spa

time " . It was like stepping into another dimension. I would plan in advance what

I would do with the next spa time. When it came, I would go put on my spa

clothes (from the thrift store) do my exercise have a very nutritious snack, and

then do something like paint my toenails or do a face mask.

Just a thought, don't see it as just exercise, make it yours, and schedule it as

part of your week.

Sounds like you have an inner conflict. Part of you wants to exercise and part

of you doesn't. Do you have 's confict resolution meditation?

If you do, it might help to listen to the meditation with exercise in mind.

I'm a football widow. From September to February, the sanctity of my home on

I checked 's website, mindforbody.com, for that meditation, but it is only

available in a set with two others for around $70. I really don't want to spend

that much. For now, I'll just work with the podcasts. I think that the ones on

exercise motivation are helping.

I have a few things to take care of this semester first. I promised my daughter

that I'd keep my granddaughter for a week while they go apt. hunting in Munich,

and, since my driver's license expires soon, I will probably need cataract

surgery to pass the eye test. Once I get those things done, I do plan to check

out some of the local agencies to see what I can do.

aerobics, yoga and weightlifting at the same time! She is a joy, and I can't

out some of the local agencies to see what I can do.
