Guest guest
Hi Karin (and group! LOL) I'm Jenna and I'm mom to a very cute 3-1/2 year old daughter, Bekah. Bekah was just recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS and ADHD-among other things. Most of the time Bekah is pleasant and quite entertaining, but there are some behavior issues, basically when frustration gets the best of her. I also have two older daughters, h and Dannika, and a son, Giovanni born just before Christmas. I live in PA also-near Pittsburgh. I'm very glad to have found this group. My family is basically in denial of Bekah's symptoms and her father (we're divorced) is basically clueless and not very involved with her. I just started going through the process of getting wrap-around services like the TSS, etc. and I feel like I am lost already! Hope to chat with you all soon- Jenna > Hi Everyone, > > Since I've been yakking away freely for a week or so I figured it might be > a > better idea to introduce myself before any more time passes. > > My name is Karin and my daughter's is Caroline. Guest guest
Hi , I am sorry your daughter is having such a hard time. I have a 16 year old that has had asthma since 1 1/2 yr old. Hers is at its worse when she has an upper resp. infection. Has anything changed since Dec. that you can think of that might have triggered her attack. New animals, anything new in her bedroom, weather change(pollen, mold from melting snow, etc) My daughter is allergic to a lot of things outdoors like grasses, trees, pollen. We live in the northeast and the grounds are saturated which is what made me think of the mold. Also my daughter is allergic to dustmites and being so cold out our house is closed up. I think the dry heat and more dust is aggravating her asthma. I think it is a good idea to look for a new doctor if this one isnt helping. An allergist of pulmonary dr. should be able to help more. If she has acid reflux that might aggravate it especially at night..mine is worse when I lay down. What is the eldeberry jiuce for? im not sure if i helped at all but if you have any more questions please write back. I hope she starts feeling better. Guest guest
This was my daughter a couple of years ago. Her symptoms are worse in winter too. She used to cough so hard all the time I thought it would never end. We finally found a right combo of meds that worked for her: pulmicort inhaler, nasonex and foradil and albuterol as needed. Of course everyone is different and what doesn't work for one may for another. It almost sounds like she has a post-nasal irritation going on. Have you tried any nasal sprays? Reflux can certainly make things much worse as well, especially at night time. I have recently read that taking a spoonful of raw honey might soothe a cough, it's worth a try. You'll find something that will work. It may take a while, it took us over a year and a very good asthma doc. Good Luck! -------------- Original message ---------------------- > I forgot to mention. Guest guest
Wetter could mean mold. My daughter seems to be very sensitive to mold. We live in an older area of our town with lots of older established trees and such so it is very hard to escape here. I try to keep my house as mold free as possible but as soon as the mold count goes up outside she seems to start the cough. -------------- Original message ---------------------- > Thanks for your reply. Guest guest
Hi , I'm so sorry your daughter has had such trouble-it is so hard to watch your child suffer. My nine year old son and I both have cough variant asthma and have had horrible episodes very much like you describe, always worse in the evening. Very stressful! We have been prescribed every cough medication in the book without much improvement. A prednisone burst will usually help gain control of the really bad episodes however, along with treatment for any contributing problems. We both take a similar batch of regular medication. The specialist should be able to help. He/she will look for anything like a sinus infection, allergies/postnasal drip, or the reflux they've already considered that can be treated to help get things under control. This serious of a problem is usually beyond the experience of the family doctor, so I think seeing the specialist is a great idea. Prednisone has always helped us the most, although codiene will sometimes calm the cough enough to help get some sleep while waiting for the pred to kick in. My cocktail for illness along with our regular meds is drink lots of water and hot lemon tea with honey to thin mucous and soothe the throat and take frequent long hot showers or sit in a steamy bathroom. The steam seems to really help. I run a vaporizer while sleeping and make sure it is a superclean dust-free room (we have allergies). We both regularly take a whole vitamin collection, but I add extra vitamin C and magnesium while sick. We both suffer from acid reflux occasionally, so I'll add prilosec or zantac if I think that is contributing. I will add that we have occasionally just been unable to get rid of the cough despite the above and it turned out there was a hidden sinus infection causing all the asthma trouble and everything improved greatly with a course of antibiotics. I hope you're able to find a great doctor who will help you as you look for solutions for her. Good luck, > > I joined this group because my 8 year old daughter has asthma. > > We thought she had grown out of it until December. She has had > several attacks since then. Guest guest
Tried the honey. It works for a little. We've done a nasal spray but I'm not sure it does anything. --- thomaszoo8@... wrote: > This was my daughter a couple of years ago. Her symptoms are worse in > winter too. Guest guest
Hi, welcome! Wish I had more time to respond, but " yes " young children (and younger) have had those type thoughts with OCD, even sexual/nudity type (and you think " we've never talked about sex or don't let them see things on TV...or watch violent shows.... " ). Sounds like it is all bursting forth now, new stuff maybe popping up. Also sounds like he doesn't like transitions/change. That can be hard to manage when something sudden happens. But at least he has a little notice that the babysitter will be away. I'd be talking to him about who will be staying with him, whatever other arrangements are being made so he can adjust to the idea. A lot of members here have gone thru the " confessing " or the reassurance type questions. Here's an article about morbid obsessions, it may be adults as examples, but a good article on the topic: http://www.wsps.info/index.php?option=com_content & view=article & id=75:morbid-obse\ ssions & catid=36:ocd-and-related-subjects-by-frederick-penzel-phd & Itemid=64 And one on violent thoughts: http://www.wsps.info/index.php?option=com_content & view=article & id=66:how-i-treat\ -violent-obsessions & catid=36:ocd-and-related-subjects-by-frederick-penzel-phd & It\ emid=64 (if above links don't work, go to: http://www.wsps.info/ and look at Staff Articles by Dr. Penzel) Also check the OCD Foundation website, it has a section for children/teens and treatment & meds: http://www.ocfoundation.org/ Glad you found our group! Ask all the questions you like and vent here when it gets too much! > > So for awhile I've known there was something different about my son. I have 2 daughters from a previous marriage. One daughter who is 17 lives in Florida with her dad and one who is 13 lives with me in mass. Guest guest
Thank you!!! I have found so much comfort from reading others posts. If i were to tell my friends what my son tells me they would think he's crazy. For awhile he was seeing people with no clothes on. Even the pastor at church. He would get so upset. He would even ask me why I didn't have underwear and pants on!!! It breaks my heart. There have been times I've even yelled at him that i didn't want to hear anymore about naked people!!!! > > > > So for awhile I've known there was something different about my son. Guest guest
My 10 yo dd has thoughts about her throat closing a lot, too. It was worse this summer. Now it isn't too bad. Thankfully! Guest guest
I had to reply to your message about confessions and all the thoughts your child is having because it is almost identical to how my son started about 2 years ago - confessions about everything - hurting peoples' feelings at school, visiting adult websites, thoughts of hurting people/our dog, etc., etc..... He would also cry about the thoughts in his head. These are all OCD related. When we first took him to a counselor, they almost reported us to social services because of all the thoughts he was talking about (especially sexually related). His counselor hadn't worked with OCD kids and wasn't aware that this is part of the obsessive/compulsive thing that goes along with it. My son it doing much better. Now when he asks me if he should worry about things, I turn the question back to him, " Should you worry about that? " and he always responds " no " now. I also know now not to make a big deal out of things he is worried about and I do let him know when the thought is an " OCD " thought and that it is okay to think these thoughts and let them exist in his mind because we all have thoughts like that sometimes. We just have to make sure that we tell ourselves which thoughts are OCD and then let them stay in there, but not worry when they come up again. I also bought some kids OCD books and that made him feel better. I think a lot of people don't realize that this type of confessing and thinking that they might hurt people/animals is very common in kids with OCD. Counseling is great, but it is important to find counselors with experience with OCD. Hope that helps! Let me know if there are any specifics you have questions about. > > >So for awhile I've known there was something different about my son. I have 2 daughters from a previous marriage. Guest guest
How old is your son? The counselor we are seeing seems to know about OCD. This week he is not supposed to be telling me any confessions. He's supposed to write them down and put them in a " worry box " . Once a day for 15 minutes he can take them out and talk about them. I think I'm part of the problem. He catches me while I'm driving and starts confessing. Then by the time I realize I should have told him NO, save it for the worry box, he's already told me. Hopefully I'll get better at this. He worries he spits in food on accident. He worries when his sister isn't home that she may get in a car crash. He worries he might go to jail. He worries about so many things I get anxious inside. I know I'm not supposed to be over protective of him but I am. I can't stand to see the terror on his face when he thinks he's done something. Do kids ever grow out of this? > > > > >So for awhile I've known there was something different about my son. I have 2 daughters from a previous marriage. Guest guest
Hello All, My name is Marie Capizzi and I live in a suburb of Pheonix, Arizona. I joined this group on the day I read about it in 's book - January 3rd. I've been following all the posts and I want to come out of the shadows and introduce myself. I have been more than a little intimatidated about posting because I am not a writer and so many of you on here write beautiful, heart wrenchingly truthful messages. I really hate writing outside of my job but I am getting used to keeping the journal as I work the book. I am a newbie to 's teachings. I discovered the podcasts when I discovered the book and this site. I have listened to the first 7 or so and it has really made a difference. Even my therapist noticed that I seem more relaxed in our last session. I do feel much less compulsive around food and some long held vices. I have about 50 pounds to lose and after Chapter 1 of the book I really feel that I can do it. I've maintained a 1200 to 1500 calorie meal plan this week and have lost almost 6 pounds so far. I am inspired by all the good messages coming at me since signing up here and in the class. I am 58 and I have struggled with my weight and yo yo dieting since age 12 when my perfectly slim mother put me on Weight Watchers. In my teens and twenties I took diety pills to lose weight and in my thirties I discovered a great program called Diets Don't Work by a guy named Schwartz or Schultz or something like that. It was very effective and 's work really reminds me of it. In my forties it was Atkins. I lost with all of them, up to 80 pounds in some cases but the weight has always come back. I am at a point in my life now where I just want to let go - I want it over with and I have great hope for the Fullfilled process, my therapy and my work with a dietician. As a few of you have shared, I too have been stuck in the feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness for a long time. I am working at quieting the dysfunctional thoughts I grew up with. I have done some of Byron 's spiritual work in questioning whether those core beliefs are actually true. I need to get back into a regular practice of this again. Also, like many of you have said, I tend to hang back, not get involved socially and I am incredibly lonely. I have not made one lasting friendship since moving to Arizona 7 years ago. I come home to a sweet dog and a noisy parrot each evening and try to numb myself out with pot in front of the television. I'm happy to report that I haven't done that once since logging on here in the past week. I am really counting on you all as my lifeline as I work the book over the next six weeks. I hope to be able to support you too. I love to talk on the phone and will put my cell phone number out there if you want to talk: .
