Guest guest
Janice Glad to meet you and glad you found this group. I have been ill for nine years now and I am so thankful I found this group within the first six months. I hope your flare doesn't last too long and that you find yourself a good doc. You are right about that being a very important relationship. Well, you will be getting a lot of these welcome messages, so I will keep it brief. Just wanted to say welcome! Stay Healthy (or at lest out of the hospital) Branson MO " janice.varley " wrote: Good evening all! I've been a member for about a week now, and I've put off writing my introduction so I could see if this was the right place for me. Here's my story: I became sick at age 17 in my senior year of high school. I almost didn't graduate because fevers around 104 kept me out of school for a month. I had to fight with the principle to graduate. I did all of my class work from the couch in my parent's living room in between doctor's appointments and naps. Luckily, it only lasted a month, and I was back to my routine of school and a part time job bagging groceries. After my graduation, I attended my first class at a university during the summer session (so I could ease myself into the transition). I ended up getting sick and spent a week's worth of my 5-week class in the hospital. Once again, I studied in a hospital bed in between naps and doctor's appointments. Eight long years later, I put myself through college and finally graduated a year and a half ago with a degree in marketing. Setbacks included Still's, trying to work to pay for school, and constantly worrying about keeping my health insurance so I could see my doctors and get my meds. I am now 27, and I have lived with Still's for the past ten years. I have seen my body morph from skinny from anorexia (caused by depression) to bloated from Prednisone. My hands are permenantly disfigured from a bad flare I had in the beginning. There was some difficulty getting my inflamation under control. I was told a couple of years ago that the bones in my wrists are still fusing together and that I'll probably need surgury on them in the near future to restore use. I recently just tried to make an appointment with the doctor I've been seeing since I first became ill because I'm having a flare right now. Finances had kept me from seeing him for the past two years. I was told this week that I'm no longer his patient, I had to find a new doctor. I get to meet my new doctor tomorrow, so I'm very anxious because I'm sure you all know what an important relationship that is! Wow...I'm pretty wordy. My apologies. Other stuff about me (so we can all continue to focus on the perseverance and strength): I like to knit, I just planted a garden this week, I am an amateur stand-up comic, I still work at the grocery store that I worked at in high school (although in a much different capacity), I live with my boyfriend, I love all of the Judge Judy type shows, and I have the most fabulous support system around me. I'm just so happy to have found you all. I still have yet to meet anyone who has this disease, and I've felt alone for a very long time. I want to say thanks for everyone for making it comfortable enough for me to share with you. I need to stop typing now, my right ring finger is making it impossible to not make typos. You're all fabulous, and I look forward to getting to know you. Janice--Mesa, AZ --------------------------------- It's here! Your new message! Get new email alerts with the free Yahoo! Toolbar. Guest guest
Welcome! Support structure is extremely crucial in dealing with this stuff. Grab on to the positive from the group. (and continue to give some back to us, of course. We can always use it.) Guest guest
Hi , I'm same boat as you. Interestingly enough I have some more information for you...I'm about 29ish...was diagnosed at age 3 as well. You were most likely born with it...reason I say that is when I was a baby the doctors had some kind of policy that infants with asthma like symptoms were not to be diagnosed with asthma until age 3...until then they were often described as pneumonia , or whatever with asthma like symptoms, etc. So a lot of people got diagnosed with it at 3 but actually had had problems since being born. I found this out by taking my dad with me to one of the asthma doctors and I heard a lot of stuff that I didn't even know. "marc.sarah" wrote: Hi, My name is . I live in Tucson, Az. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, I've also recently learned that raw milk sours, and store milk spoils. I was automatically throwing out any milk that sat out and started getting warm, etc. for the first week after getting raw milk...Then my normally-so-very-calm mother witnessed this and went into a tiny, red-faced rampage/lecture about how I was throwing out the best part of milk! It took a full day for my brain to process the fact that milk that had set out wasn't bad. Then I felt extremely stupid...why else would they call it " sour cream " . Duh. Needless to say, I always try to keep some soured milk and cornbread on hand in case mom visits again. I've also learned that you can substitute soured milk for milk or water in just about any recipe. It's a taste preference thing. > > > > My name is Lynn and my husband and I live in MA with our 4 children. > > We have started buying through a locally organized buying club and > > getting raw milk and grass fed meat from an Amish farm. > > I have a tendency to have some milk left over and I was throwing it out. > > Now I have been told, " Never throw it out! Carol Caruso http://www.carolcaruso.fourpointmoms.com/FAQs.cpo http://www.carolcaruso.fourpointwellness.com/ http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/324801_cleaning24.html ladyvamp5489@... my introduction Hi all, My name is Cindi. I am 51 years old, and was diagnosed with asthma when I was four years old. I never outgrew it. This will be a long introduction, but I feel it necessary to give you some idea of my background in dealing with my asthma all of these years. My main purpose for joining was to give support and good advice from my experiences, plus to get support, and maybe new information. Primarily, at this point, I want to give support. My parents did not have a lot of money, and in the first nine years of my life we lived way out in the country…60 miles to the nearest town in Texas. Then at the age of nine, we moved to Arizona. They still did not have a lot of money, so going to the doctor for my asthma was maybe two times. They divorced when I was 13, and I stayed with my dad…still not seeing a doctor for it. I spent many nights sleeping in a rocking chair moved to the couch to make a bed for me that I could sleep sitting up with my legs to the couch. I had a small transistor radio that I listened to in the attacks that I had sleeping there. My attacks lasted about three-four days. Then I could graduate slowly to my bed where I could lay flat again. After the divorce, I found Primatene tablets over the counter. They kept me out of the rocking chair, but my lifestyle was limited still in activities, and when I got colds or the flu, I would have days absent from school with my asthma. We have always had mules and horses, and at the age of ten or so, we found out that I was severely allergic to alfalfa. I was no longer allowed to feed because I would break out in hives, and have an instant asthma attack. My life went on, and I kept myself ok with my asthma as long as I had Primatene tablets. At about the age of 27, I was working in a motel as a maid, in Phoenix, Arizona. That was the first indication that maybe the Primatene was not going to keep me going like I liked. I had my first asthma attack in years. I should have went to the hospital, but did not have insurance. I found a better job, and my asthma became manageable again with the Primatene. I am thinking that something in the motel rooms that I cleaned triggered it! Years went by, had kids, was married a couple of times. Still dependant on the Primatene. I all of a sudden became allergic to shell fish….had ate crab legs and lobster many many times, but one night I cooked lobster and about six hours later took myself to the hospital with hives, severe asthma. They got it under control in the emergency room, and when I left they sent my home with my very first prescription for albuterol and asthmacort. I filled both prescriptions, kept using the albuterol when needed, but only used the asthmacort for a few days and just did not see the need. Big mistake…but probably common. Then, after my final and fourth child, me and my ex husband bought a house in Glendale, Arizona. I had no clue that we moved near alfalfa fields. After a year or so it became very evident I was in trouble again. The Primatene was not managing my asthma, and I started waking up feeling that my breath was not there, and I would get mild attacks and go frantically searching for the albuterol. I was getting to the point that I was taking too much Primatene. I finally had insurance from a job that I working at…good insurance. But, I dislike going to a doctor. One day, I was in bed…had been for three days, and my oldest daughter paid a visit, and demanded that I go to the hospital. I did not put up a fight, went to the hospital. I spent about 6 hours in the emergency room with ivs and, the nurse came in and told me that they had done everything to get it under control to send me home, but I was not responding to the meds, so they were going to admit me…..YIKES!!! They kept me in the hospital for one week. I hated it, but there is where they “trained†me with my asthmacort…..4 puffs every 4 hours for one week there. I have never went off what is prescribed to me since. I hated every minute in the hospital, and if using the asthmacort every day as prescribed kept me out, that was the way it was going to be. At that point I DITCHED the Primatene. 10 years ago I moved to Mississippi. Lived there for 7 years and have since moved back to Arizona. In Mississippi I had a wonderful doctor, excellent insurance. She put me on a combination of asthmacort, albuterol, singulair, and nasonex. I am still on this combination, except that our current insurance prefers flovent, so I am using that now instead of asthmacort. The singulair has been the best thing that has ever happened. The nasonex is for allergies in the nose. So, that is my story. I had wanted to respond to a couple of posts to the group already, but sensed the need to first introduce myself. Thanks for letting me join!

Guest guest
Hi Annemie, I am really sorry about your neuropath problems!! good luck with those. About your asthma attack right beside your boss...that happened to me once. My boss just gave me a blank look, and that did not help, because then I got all self conscious, and I really needed to control my breathing....seems there was an episode at the time that got me stressed on top of asthma that was already bothering me. We all got over it. I am happy that asthma is a disease that doctors can put a finger on...unlike lupus, fabromylagia (sp?), etc. I feel for those people, and asthma is also misunderstood, but at least it is a disease that there is concrete clinical data on. I hope I made some kind of sense there. Asthma is a draining disease. There are things you can do alternative like eating more healthy, and getting more sleep than normal. It is not a disease that can be treated holistically totally. The holistic approaches are beneficial, but never should be substituted for the life saving drugs. The holistic approaches do assist in managing the disease. Asthma can be deadly in moments if not treated according to your doctor's advice. Do listen to your doctor! I have found that I need more sleep than the normal person. I am finally married to someone who understands why. Even though I am on the medication, it disrupts my sleep enough. On my days off I love when I can get 11 hours sleep. I absolutely need at least 9 hours to function as a normal person. Those 11 hour days are far and few between, but they are very cool!!!! hugs, Cindi Annemie wrote: > Cindi > Wow what a story , and thanks for sharing it ,.. > Since I was diagnosed with asthma the last year I will be sure to ask here > when there is something that i have questions about,.. > I had 3 attacks about a week ago in the course of 4 days and I was > drained,.. > With all the other stuff going on , having neuropathy in the groinarea which > makes my legs go funny on me from time to time and in pain 24/7 and being a > migraineur , and had to have an flushot the week before last , the days > after I felt worse and worse ,.. > But taking it easy , stayed home for a number of days , because I got the > second attack at work and my boss was standing right beside me when I did > ,.. Guest guest
Hello Cindi Well I have been dealing with the neuropathy for over 10 years now and if all goes well then I have to go to Maastricht Academic Hospital this year or at the least early next year for the treatment they see as a last resort to help me , they will put a needle in the nerve in my groin and work with electroshock to try and reprogram that nerve , because normally it does send signals once in a while , the nerve in my groin does so constantly that is why I am in pain in my legs and lower back 24.7 and it is so frustrating and draining me from the little energy I have anyway,.. That my boss was present when I had that attack of asthma that was horrible , the look on his face as in puzzled what was going on ,.. i had a breakdown really , i could not even stand up straight let alone walk so I did call in sick ,.. I know that people know what asthma is for a surtant part but dont get what it is if you are dealing with it , they have no clue as to how it feels when you get an attack of that (( and there the misunderstanding is and that brings a lot of judgement and stuff that they think they know it what it is but they dont have the faintest idea ,.. same goes with the migraine in a way , they so often compair it with just a headache but that is a totally different thing to begin with ,... I know that i do not sleep enough as it is ,.. I dont know but i got the idea that is something that doesnt make it better either ,.. My ex-fiancee didnt understand migraines really ,.. he sayd stuff like , sex will help they always say it does for a many things,.. and for some with what they struggle with it might but no ,.. I know he did try to understand but he didnt get the full impact of it all really:(( I broke up with him before I was diagnosed with the asthma , and from time to time he emails me and ask how i am doing now ? Maybe he did read up some ,...I dont know ,.. He is not a bad person at all just not the one for me that is what I did figure out,.. What all do you guys do in the time that you feel ok and have sparetime?? I love to tag and create stuff on my pc and read ,.. watch a movie or such too:))) Anyone who wants to talk on yahoomessenger ,my id is solros25 feel free to add me and then please tell me who you are and that I am in the same group as you here , since this is a rather new group for me that I am in:))) Anyway ,.. liefs and a hug to all who need it:)) Annemie my introduction >> >> >> >>> Hi all, >>> >>> My name is Cindi. Guest guest
Hi , I am not so sure that lack of sleep has some influence on my asthma, but I am real sure that asthma has some influence on my sleep. Lack of sleep is one thing that I do not need with the job I do....I need my rest to do my best at my job, which by the way is a cashier at a local gas station. I need to focus on those people that come in and buy lottery tickets, buy gas, and buy beer. I have went many nights without much sleep, but the asthma had made it that way. I hope I am clear about what I am trying to say. Asthma is a draining disease, and proper diet and plenty of rest helps the body to cope with it. I am in no way a proper diet person, but I do know that it could be better LOL!!!! But, I do get my sleep when I can. hugs! cindi wrote: > > Hi; > > Ok, there is someone else that thinks that lack of sleep has some > influence on their asthma. > > Recent Activity > > * > 6 > New Members > <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/asthma/members;_ylc=X3oDMTJjY2o0M2g4BF9TAzk3MzU5N\ zE0BGdycElkAzI0NTYEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNzA1MDYxNjEzBHNlYwN2dGwEc2xrA3ZtYnJzBHN0aW1lAzExO\ TUzMzQ2OTQ-> > > Visit Your Group > <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/asthma;_ylc=X3oDMTJiZmIzb3RsBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdyc\ ElkAzI0NTYEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNzA1MDYxNjEzBHNlYwN2dGwEc2xrA3ZnaHAEc3RpbWUDMTE5NTMzNDY5N\ A--> > > Yahoo! Guest guest
I know that that doesnt help if they are panicking around me , I just wished that I knew a trick for myself not to panick really?? Guest guest
Annemie, I see you are from the NL. I grew up in northern DE and suffered since childhood from Asthma, too. Not many meds available in the post war time. So they did the tried and true with me. Hot shower steam in the bathroom, hit tea with thyme and honey and they would send me to a different climate, often to the North Sea. Just the change in climate often did the trick , they send me to children homes on the islands.. Over the years I learned the triggers for my asthma. Emotional upset played a bog part in it. One of my son's figured it out one day and said : " you can't get mad at me, than you can't breathe! " , he was right. As I got older perfumes, scents, chlorine and mold really got me and I have to be careful to be around them. Also old books. At 62, I am on Serevent, Pulmicort and always have my rescue inhaler with me..one never knows... What is tricky is to go to churches for weddings etc, seems people really lay on the perfume for that..some movies, where you sit next to someone with perfume or even restaurants. I had to ask Air France to take the perfume out of their lavatories, they did not like it, but did. Stay well, C-M
Guest guest
Hi there I immediately have to ask what you mean with DE? my mind is a bit blurry today so sorry if I dont get it right away?? Oh I didnt think about that period of time , but I can see that things have changed yes,.. And I surely can imagion that the change of climate would help too ,.. I think that is a trigger with me too , the time a week over ago when my boss was there when I got that attack , I did feel horrible as it was , you know , the legs bothering me a great deal and being so tired all together and stress at work and then I just can not control this from happening , to much going on at the same time I think that and that I do worry about what is going to come in the time to come because I did hear a month ago that we all ( collegues too) will lose our job in the new year and I do work there for over 17 years now,.. And I surely can see that a surtant kind of perfume in general is a trigger yes ,.. sad but true:(( Thank you for your reply and I hope that you are having a good weekend:)) liefs Annemie Re: my introduction > Annemie, > I see you are from the NL. Guest guest
First I have to admit that I am a leary about speaking up in this group. Not because I have actually been threatened but because, so far, my 'issue' or my journey has been only mine. I shared it once with my partner but I have no brung it up since. Part of me doesn't want to jinx it and the other part is simply embarrassed. So I guess I am here reaching out, very slowly and with hestitation, looking for the support of people who won't judge me or think I am crazy/weak for having this struggle in the first place. My body is not overweight (although it has been in the past) nor is it fit but I struggle daily with feeling appreciative of my body. I regualrly feel disdain towards the parts of my body that I judge most frequently like my stomach and my thighs and I dream of just cutting them off! As I was listening to some of the first podcasts (I think #4 or #5)I came to realize that once of the thoughts that is holding me back is that if I am fit and slim, then life won't be fun anymore. I picture life as a fit and slim person as someone who takes themselves too serious and therefore is actually not at peace. My overall goal is have peace in my soul and my body so losing weight is not a very attractive option for me. Does anyone or has anyone dealt with this belief? I am having a difficult time getting past it and would love some support. Thank you! S
