Her symptoms sound very similar to how my daughter first presented her OCD.

She would only wear one pair of underwear, pants, and a dress and would

hide them from me at night so I couldn't wash them because washing them

made them " wrong. "

I am happy to report that after weekly cognitive behavioral therapy and a

moderate dose of Zoloft she now gets dressed without thinking twice and

even wears jeans. Which after all we went through is a huge triumph!

Children's Hospital of Michigan(Detroit) has some good ocd information on their

website. I can highly recommend Dr. Butkus, Ph.D, LP, for OCD therapy.

He is at Children's Hospital, also sees patients at Abaris Behavioral

Health(www.abarishealth.com) in Shebly Twp & Rochester Hills.

> Hello all, I am new to the group. I have a 12 year old Aspie son who is doing

great. My 10 year old daughter is recently...challenging. She had clothing

issues since very young, wearing the same 2-3 shirts & pants for weeks/months.

She went months last spring with her hair in a ponytail & wouldn't brush it out.

She had to take baths this summer because the shower didn't get her clean

enough. There was a 6 month period last year when she would spend 20 minutes (at

least) in the bathroom wiping. She started with a counselor in July, now (her

words) things are out of control. She can't sleep in her bed unless she is on

top of a mountain of pillows & blankets because she is uncomfortable. She

becomes hysterical if I have to wash her clothes. She can't wear pajamas at

night. She only has 1 pair of yoga pants she will wear. She can't wear

underwear. I can't watch her leave her bedroom in the morning. I can't tell her

I like her hair or clothes or she runs out of the room screaming. The list goes

on & on. At school, she is a perfect role-model, A+ student.

OCD, because when things go wrong she has to start from the beginning again.

Bedtime is becoming awful, and getting anywhere on time is non-existent.

Ideas regarding good eval & treatment in Michigan will be especially

appreciated. I'm not even sure where to start with everything, so I'm just going

to start researching. Thanks for listening!

Hi, welcome! I'm thinking OCD is the primary problem. She may have some

sensory issues going on (depending on her reasons re the clothing -- too tight,

can't stand the feel of material...) but OCD could also be involved with the

clothing (hence, you comment on what she wears and she has to go change).

You might seek out an occupational therapy evaluation for her just to test for

sensory issues. My son (OCD, Aspergers, dysgraphia) also had some sensory

issues, not with clothing though. He need OT for writing issues (motor skills)

and with the eval (he was 12 when OT for this) I found out he had some sensory

issues I didn't know about. But OT helped with all.

Another son has sensory issues with certain materials, gives him the " shivers "

but has managed, and eventually expanded his clothing choices. When younger

(they're both 22, twins), I had a limited choice for him too.

I would first look at treating the OCD. Make sure you visit the OCD Foundation

website for information. And feel free to ask any questions here, I got some of

my best ideas for working on things from this group.

Hello,

I am also new to the group. My son is 13 and it became obvious about 6

month ago that he has OCD. Looking back, there were signs of OCD since

he was about 3-4 years old. We are also in Michigan

(Ann Arbor). When I started looking for a therapist it was a little

disappointing. The University of Michigan has an anxiety clinic , but

they were not taking new patients unless they were directly connected

to (ie employed by or had their insurance through) the U of M. Another

therapist I tried suggested that I wait until it got worse and he was

asking for help. ( no no). I finally found the U of M Center for the

Family and Child. This is a training sight for graduate students. They

are usually here for a year. Our son started there about a month ago

and likes his therapist. They are using CBT and ERP which I guess is

the best current therapy.

(the students are under the direct supervision of Doctors and could

prescribe Rx meds if needed). They take insurance, but if you don't

have it they charge on a sliding scale rate and are very reasonable.

We're just getting started, but I'm feeling very positive. If you are

in the Ann Arbor area, I would recommend this clinic.

PS Thanks to everyone out there. It helps to hear your stories and

ideas.

See, I knew there were others out there with the same problems! It gives me hope

to hear ideas to make things feel " better " for her. Most people don't get it.

They think if I just buy softer clothes (or my favorite " stop letting her get

away with it " ) then everything will be OK. I learned with my son that you can't

discipline the Aspergers out of him, so I'm taking the same approach with my

daughter.

Ha ha, stop letting her get away with it!  UGH!  People really do not have a

clue.

What I have done when my dd get stuck on certain clothing is buy a bunch of the

same thing, identical.  She does not like to wear underwear, but has a favorite

kind.  Once we found one she liked, we bought enough for every day of the

week.  They are identical.  Would that work?

We are by Lansing.

Thanks for all of the replies! I am definitely shopping for a new therapist, so

any suggestions in Michigan are appreciated.

On the up side, my daughter's report card was straight A's. Guess wearing the

same clothes for 3 months doesn't actually interfere with learning!

Does anyone else get sudden bursts of breakthroughs with OCD symptoms? For

example my daughter wouldn't wear any other shirt for the longest time then all

of a sudden decides she will wear one. I'm not sure if that is the nature of the

beast or progress??

My daughter, 4, has both OCD and SPD. What you describe sounds so much like my

daily life with Lexy. She will only wear certain panties, pants and shirts. She

sleeps on 2 quilts that have to be straight with no wrinkles in them. So on and

So on. She repeats things and questions until you give her the answer she wants,

which is not always the right answer but to her thats all that matters. She

lines toys up perfectly and if the cat comes through she has a major meltdown.

Heres is my problem...in the morning we start with the same routine, get her out

of bed, she goes potty and then we get dressed. If her clothes are not right in

some way she will insist we go back to bed in the jammies she got out of and

start all over. So I see it as the SPD is the clothes issue and then the OCD is

the anxiety and having to start over. Combine the two and you have a double

anxiety filled little lady who can not help herself to calm down. I hope you get

an answer so that you can begin to treat her and help her find some comfort.

Good luck to you. If you ever have any questions feel free to ask.

doing great.

The list goes

on & on. At school, she is a perfect role-model, A+ student.

between SPD, OCD and Anxiety. After this weekend, I'm really leaning towards

OCD, because when things go wrong she has to start from the beginning again.

Bedtime is becoming awful, and getting anywhere on time is non-existent.

Does anyone else get sudden bursts of breakthroughs with OCD symptoms? For

example my daughter wouldn't wear any other shirt for the longest time then all

of a sudden decides she will wear one. I'm not sure if that is the nature of the

beast or progress??

LOL!  My dd does very well in school, too.  I think allowing things like - the

same shirt for 3 mos - allows the mind to focus on school work, instead of

having to be fixated on wearing the " wrong " shirt.  :)

Thanks for all of the replies! I am definitely shopping for a new therapist, so

any suggestions in Michigan are appreciated.

On the up side, my daughter's report card was straight A's. Guess wearing the

same clothes for 3 months doesn't actually interfere with learning!

Hi. I am from Wisconsin. I checked out 's book from the library the

other day and I am feeling very connected to what she has to say. I am trying to

get the hang of finding and listening to the podcasts.

I am definately in need of people to take this journey of change with.

My current intention is to develop long lasting motivation towards a slim

healthy me.
