Guest guest
Deb, I don't mind sharing info about my neck, that's why we're here :-) I have degenerative disk desease and my first fusion was done when I was about 37, but I had been having problems for a few years before that. I was in constant pain in my arms/hands/etc, but almost immediately after the surgery it was gone. The doc (a neurosurgeon) did a fusion at C5/C6 (using bone from my hip and no metal plate) unfortunatly for me, my bones didn't mend well and I started having problems again. A few years later I had another fusion at C5/C6/C7 (using donated bone and a metal plate). The 2nd surgery was with a different doc (an orthopedic surgeon who specialized in the spine). Recovery after the 2nd surgery was much better, because of the plate that was installed. And, I know it's just psychological but I also feel more secure about my disks staying put. It is a tough decision to make regarding surgery. I have two suggestions 1) Find a GOOD doctor that specializes in spinal surgery and 2) The longer you wait the more nerve damage there is and nerves don't repair themselves. I have some residual nerve damage that will never go away. Hope this information helps and if you have any more quesitons, just holler. > > , > I am glad you chatted, I am Debbie AKA Deb R as there > are lots of Debs here, I live in Tacoma,Washington. Guest guest
Hi , I too have degenerative bone disease. I am very surprised that a nero surg would use your own bone knowing it has the tendency to degenerate and is why you are there for the surgery to begin with! My neuro surg did a caged fusion on me and reinforced with titanium rod and screws etc. It took me a while to heal but was much better afterwards. He also told me that he would be seeing me again as he sees where the one below it needs to have titanium rod extended but because it has yet to blow for insurance to see it as necessarry, we will have to wait until it does. My surgery was on lower lumbar. L/5=L/6. So I know a bit of what your talking about. Upon the day of my leaving, a woman took my spot that had her neck done. She said she had it done before (scrapped and used her bone to fuse) but was back again. I thought having this disease was quite enough for me in my lifetime until I got ME/Fibro! We just do what we have to on bad days..what else can you do? Bless You!

Guest guest
-Hi Sharon Funny you should say about the tea helping your asthma, I find that coffee does the same, the caffeine helps somehow, handy that the bookstore where I work has a Starbucks in it. They even give me a coffee for " medicinal purposes " when I come through from the store and I'm wheezing really badly. Like you, I have no family history of asthma, 43 and had the Big " A " for 18 months. It's environmental stuff that triggers me mainly, too hot, too cold, too dusty, too humid, too dry, smoking, perfume and the list continues ad nauseum... it's hard work not letting it get you down, and always being on your guard against the triggers, even with the medication, it doesn't stop them happening, I guess, just not so badly. By turning to a good cup of tea, does that mark you as being British? I'm an ex-pat myself, now settled in Ontario, home of snow and -35/- 40c in the winter, and dry air that freezes in your nose! +35/+40c in the summer, and humidity that makes you melt like butter! Ohh yes and all the smog that floats up from the U.S. Lovely... but apart from that, a wonderful place to live. Guest guest
I'm not surprised the tea helped. The caffeine-like substance in it, theophylline, has been used as an anti-asthmatic for a long time. A therapeutic dose would be kind of a lot of tea, but sometimes a couple strong cups on top of all your regular meds can help you ward off an attack--or keep breathing while waiting for a ride to the hospital. > > Hi all, > > My name is Sharon I'm 37 yrs old I've had asthma now for 2 years > which I still can't believe i have this as no-one in my family has it > not my mother, father or brother just me. Guest guest
Hi Marge, I feel your pain!! I know what it's like to have asthma attacks and I know the fear it invokes. I have what I think is mild asthma ( even thoough my doctor isn't saying I have asthma) He says, allergic asthmatic bronchitis( which is asthma) Do you have an asthma action plan? If things are that bad for you and if they stay that bad you probably need to do some thing like change or add meds. I'm not really much of an expert because I'm fairly new to this site too. I can sympathize with you on the feeling scared, I've been doing OK until just recently when I had an attack in the latenight/early morning, I got up coughing , couldn't breathe and my chest hurt, it scared me to death. I don't have a plan and wouldn't have known what to do if my inhaler hadn't releived my symptoms. I would say to get with your doc and develop a plan and follow it to the letter. Good luck and keep in touch.marge_rly wrote: Hello, my name is Marge. I am 55 years old. In November of 2000, I had the whooping cough for the first time. Since that time, I have had asthma. However, every time I get anything viral, I have a bad episode and it seems that they are getting worse. This time, I caught a cold and this attack has lasted for two weeks. It is the worst I have had and I am really scared. Despite breathing treatments and inhalents, I had a very bad night last night and I am still having trouble breathing today. I would appreciate any information and 'tips' for coping. This is very scary for me right now. Thank you, Marge Check out the hottest 2008 models today at Yahoo! Autos. Guest guest
Thank you for replying. I do not have a plan as I have always been able to control it with inhalers really easily. This is the first time it has been this bad. My doctor gave me a new inhaler a couple of days ago and told me to use it as my emergency one. It is called Combivent. Has anyone heard of this? I called my doctor and they are out of the office today. She said someone would call be back some time today. I have used it three times and I don't know if that is dangerous to use it too much or not. I am really new to this because it has NEVER been this bad. I am breathing a little easier now, but still feel that tightness and 'rattle'. This is just very scary. Thanks again, Marge Re: New Member Hi Marge, I feel your pain!! Guest guest
Hi Joanne, I'm also on Symbicort, a salbutamol rescue inhaler, and singulair for allergies, as well as prednisone for when I get really bad. You should ask you Doctor for the best advice, but I usually have a couple of puffs of my inhaler before I try anything strenuous, which I think athletes do. (I'm no athlete!!!!) Ask for Matt's help, he's our resident guru, and always extremely helpful and knowledgable-. Give those beautiful dogs a hug from me and " Yacki-dar " (ex-pat Brit in Ont.
