My doctor is great about giving me samples of antibiotics when a short run will help. Terry, tell your doctor to get over himself.

God bless you!

I don't get it, the Insurance company told me I should do this, but I feelas if I shouldn't now. I called the PCP office today to see if the drug rephad been through yet to get my samples of my meds to get me through anothermonth. Of course they had everything I needed and for a month's worth. Shewas bagging it up and I go pick it up at the office closer to my hometomorrow. With my Copays this is $250 worth of copay medications, that's notto say how much the insurance company pays. Yeah I have my coupons, but if Ican get the samples I won't have to lay out the money to pay copays, but whyin the world am I feeling so guilty as if I shouldn't do this?Terry I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that Hedidn't trust me so much. ~Mother Teddy Bear's Early Learning ProgramEstablished August of 1992____________ _________ _________ _________No

Ok I have always read that the US health system was better than other countries, but I am really believing that not to be the case. Was just discussing this the other day with someone from Canada..sorry I dont remember if that was on this list or another one! Oh well the good ol USA has a lot of issues it needs to fix! Think I will just not worry about it!

Re: Re: Why do I feel so guilty

Wow - I can't believe how different your healthcare is to ours!

As far as I am aware, a doctor's surgery can't refuse you. Almost all of our doctors work in surgeries, not independently, which means that although you are assigned to a specific doctor (GP - General Practitioner) within the practise, you can see any. I don't really like the GP I was assigned to, so I'll usually see anyone who has a slot at a convenient time. As it's a busy university practise, as well as being the main practise for the local area, requesting an appointment with a specific GP may well mean waiting longer. I was lucky when I first saw a doctor about getting breathless easily (that was not actually what I'd gone for - I just mentioned it, and she acted straight away), and since then, I have requested an appointment specifiaclly with her.

To register at a new practise is easy - you just go in, fill in a form with your details, some will give you a basic check up at that point, especially if you hvaen't actually seen a doctor for a while, then your notes are sent from the old practise.

No-one really thinks twice about going to A & E in an emergency, as we know it won't cost us. Yes, we do pay, out of taxes, but it is not an upfront payment, and how much you pay in tax is linked to how much you earn. There are, those, though, that go to A & E when they could easily wait and see a doctor, and also people who seem to treat ambulances as a free taxi service. I personally think that those who end up in A & E because of drunkenness and drugs (both of which have been identified as a big drain on the NHS) should pay. Might make them think twice...

I've noticed some of you mentioning phoning the doctor rather than going to A & E - here, we;d either go straight to A & E, or we have NHS direct (NHS 24 in Scotland), where you can speak to a nurse to get advice.

As for prescriptions, again, not being able to afford it is not an issue. Certain people qualify for free prescriptions (kids under 17, under 18 if a student, pregnant women, retired people, unemployed people etc) and the rest of us pay a prescription charge which we complain about, but compared to what you all pay, it's peanuts (£5 in Scotland, £6,75 in England). I think as welll you can pay a set amount (£40 seems to ring a bell) for the year, to cover all prescriptions.

Whilst we complain about the NHS (believe me, it has it's faults), I think I;d rather have that than your system... I did read somewhere that the healthcare system is one thing many Americans would like to swap for our British one!!

Hey Only I'M allowed to use short term memory loss as an excuse. I'm sure he told you about that hard fall I took at Tyler's Graduation Party. It's so frustrating to not be able to remember simple conversations, I lost an entire week of the week of Tyler's Graduation.

Well I'm really glad I hadn't done anything to make you think I was upset with you, cause as far as I'm concerned we're buds!

Before everyone jumps on me I am not saying it is wrong but, playing the devil's advocate, just because your insurance company encourages it does not make it better. Of course they would like to save money and if you are not paying they are not either. I am sure my insurance hates me. I am paying over $600 a month on prescription copays alone. It is costing my insurance about $4000 a month not counting all of my office visits to numerous specialists and hospital stays. I think if your dr offers it be grateful for it! I think as long as the drug reps are giving the samples to the drs it is up to them to determine where the need is and hopefully they are able to see and fill that need! Unfortunately, as we have all seen, there are too many drs that don't have the welfare of their patients at heart.

I don't get it, the Insurance company told me I should do this, but I feelas if I shouldn't now.

I'm not going to jump on you because I firmly believe everyone is entitled to how they feel and their beliefs, however when your struggling to make ends meet and it comes down to putting food on the table, gas in your vehicle paying college tuition or getting your medications to maintain your asthma, it's not easy to pick there is it? No, my pcp dr understands that as I've been with him for years and knows I don't ask for anything, but with so many of the prescriptions being under such high copays either ask for help from the dr's with samples OR don't take the meds due to not being able to afford them even with insurance. I sat down just down and totaled up just how much I pay in copays each month for medications: $415 just in prescription meds. This is stuff I can't live without, and I'm sure once I get scoped I'll get put on something for the acid reflux so that will add more to it. So I'm not taking advantage of anything. And I sent with my son yesterday a thank you card to my dr and his nurses for the care they give me and how much I appreciate them helping me with my medications.

I absolutely know what it & #39;s like to make major sacrifices to pay for life

saving treatments, Every cent I make as a teacher goes to medical payments.

I & #39;m considered critically ill end had to take a second job to buy food and

gas. If your dr has the drugs great. Use them. All I was saying in my other post

was that justifying it to yourself because the insurance company told you to is

faulty logic. I said nothing negative about the behavior. I & #39;m glad your dr

can help. You were the one feeling guilty.

Marty...I was able to get a personal policy through Blue Choice, despite my pre-existing conditions. It was relatively inexpensive and I think pretty much bare bones, but you might want to look into that. This is in Florida too and within the last year. I think Humana has come out with something similar lately too.

Floridas medical system sucks to start with if you ask me. I grew up in NY and never had to worry about getting a dr appointment. With the dr I had before I got married, I had to wait 3 weeks just to get a follow up AFTER and emergency room visit...without meds to get me through till then.

Fortunately I am now covered on my husbands military benefits and as he is career, this is something that forseeably I wont have to worry about in the future. The career guys get bene's for life, I think that even the guys/gals that just do one tour should be entitled to some sort of coverage for life...maybe at a reduced rate or something like that.

That's true if you dont have insurance...especially in Florida. They turned my bill over to collections 30 days after I was seen here...I was initially refusing to pay b/c the doc made me sit there for 6 hours, which was based on my ox sat being 99% (I couldn't speak without coughing, but my o2 sat was ok so I wasn't in danger...they actually told me that), then he charged me for 3 prednisones when I got one as I was walking out the door of the ER...I had been released. The prednisone was an afterthought. Then they billed me over 500.00 for that. I paid 100.00 copay at the door, then my insurance decided that they would only pay part of what was left. Leaving me 250.00 to pay. PLUS here in Florida you also have to pay the DOCTOR if you happen to get a doctor not in your insurance plan's network. Like I have a friggin choice in the matter right??

So I also had to pay another 75.00 for a 5 minute shoddy examination that consisted of what did they do for you in NY when this happened. Me telling him that they gave me a nebulizer and prednisone. Him saying well, Ill give you prednisone but that's it. Then saying I can go. He NEVER listened to my lungs. He also gave me z-pak but never told me why.

Then of course I had to pay for the meds...but that was only 20.00 max.

When I went to the ER in NY they didn't bill you for anything after the copay. You never paid for the individual doctor either. I never heard of such a thing. So..let me see, Im paying the doctor AND the hospital for the same service, so Im paying twice??? And people here are ok with that..
