Guest guest
Hi Everyone Was wondering if anywone had any thoughts or experience with what I am going through. I have been up and down with Asthma diagnoses for 2 years now. I was originally diagnosed with Asthma at that time by my PCP. I was feeling short of breath and coughing alot. When she did breathing tests in her office I was told they were not good and the more they did them, the more I would cough. I was put on Advair and given a rescue inhaler. I never needed to use the rescue inhaler and it seemed that the Advair was working fine. About 1 year into this I started having cronic throat problems, red throat, hoarsness all the time, I was diagnosed with thrush, yuck. PCP took me off the Advair and ordered PFT's a Methocholine challenge and made an appt with a pulmanologist. I had to wait 6 months for all of these appts. I recently had a sleep study that showed Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The sleep specialist noted that I snored " sometimes " , but that it seemed that I was wheezing in my sleep. ( have been told that by others also ). I have used my CPAP machine 3 times now....I wake in the morning with a feeling like I am starving for air though, its a strange sensation that I seem to have all day. Last night I fell asleep while reading and didnt put on the machine. I woke this morning feeling very short of breath, tight chest, dizzy and sweating. Used the rescue inhaler and it helped me and now I am just left with a headache. My PFT's where normal on the test a few months ago, I have the Methocholine test this Monday, finally. I will admit that I am very anxious about that test......worried about having an asthma attack there? Could the fact that I am on a CPAP but not being treated for the asthma be making it worse???? Im so sorry for this long post but I am struggling with all of this and not getting any of the right answers it seems. Please help if you can. Thanks Tracey
Guest guest
Hi Tracey, My husband also has sleep apnea and couldn't use CPAP machine for a variety of reasons. However, he has a dental appliance which pushes his jaw forward when he sleeps. It has helped immensely. My son takes advair, it seems to help for a while and then becomes less effective. He hates the rescue inhaler because it gives him a headache too. --- traceyf1980 wrote: > Hi Everyone > Was wondering if anywone had any thoughts or > experience with what I > am going through. Guest guest
Hi, Tracey. I also have Asthma and sleep apnea,, I use the CPap machine too.. The only time I wake with the problem you have, is when my hose either gets kinked, or the mask slides down,, I can not sleep on my stomach because of this,, It makes themask slide and can not get breath, I hope this will help with your problem,, you may have deeper problems that may cause this also. Guest guest
I have Asthma and sleep apnea. I am like you Tracey. The methacolate challenge is designed from what I have found to basically judge your level of sensitivity. I have not been able to have mine yet because my asthma doc says my lung capacity on the spyrometer is too low. He cannot treat the asthma without knowing the degree of severity. He does have me on asthmanex and albuterol HCF rescue inhaler. What you are feeling in the morning is an asthma attack. It might be triggered by an allergy to dustmites. If you have not had a chance to, you might want to look at covering your pillow and mattress in an allergen free cover to block the dust mites. When I wake like that I often have an asthma attack and really thank the CPAP. When you wake up with the tight chest feeling, take a puff from your rescue inhaler and the feeling will be relieved. My asthma doc suprised me saying I was doing alot of wheezing and I did not recognize it but he said that is not uncommon. I have had to learn to sleep on my back as on the side and my mask slips. It is going to take some getting used to. It took me a week Tracey before I got used to the feel and the sounds. For the last four days I have managed 7-8 hours of sleep feeling rested and that for me is a real accomplishment. I am hoping by my next visit the cold will be gone and we can do the challenge. knock on wood. I have severe allergies and am blessed that my allergist and my asthma doctor are the same thing and he is also an immunologist. He has been with me for several years and was not surprised to see Asthma developed as he has suspected it since he first saw me in my twenties but I never showed enough symptoms for him to be sure as the allergies were out of control. Now they are under control more and he could see the asthma which he too picked up with the coughing. I was told to take Claritin when seasonal allergies were around. My PCP thought my asthma was exersise induced because its bad when I am trying to do something physical. THe pulmanologist is not sure if I am having shortness of breath because I am also on atenolol for migraines and I quess that is a no no when you have asthma. Its just that since I started on the CPAP that feeling in the morning is very odd...do you think maybe because the air is being forced into my lungs with pressure and since the asthma is not treated right now my lungs are inflamed and this air pressure is aggravating the asthma?? Just an uneducated quess. Thanks for your reply...its been a great help to know there are others out there Tracey >
