I also react to red dyes but an allergist I had told me the worst thing for me is yellow dye number 5 which they put in baby shampoo! Now you would think and baby shampoo would be safe, right? Why they need to put dye in things is beyond me anyway. Tang used to be loaded with yellow dye number 5. The only dyes that dont seem to make me sick are the blue ones.

I can be about anything. I, for instance, have a violent reaction to red dye # 40. It is in an amazing number of things, even some that are not red.

Mostly through an elimination diet. If you feel that you have symptoms that are related to food, the first step is to keep a food/symptom diary. Reactions to food can be immediate, hours later, or even 24 hours later. Foods are also complicated, lots of chemicals and dyes are added. So a diary becomes crucial to figuring out what is causing the problem. An elimination diet means eating very limited foods that are known to be as safe as possible. You eat this clean diet for a couple of weeks and then gradually introduce other foods one at a time. The tough part, aside from a boring diet, is that the inert ingredients in vitamins and OTC/prescription meds can easily be a problem. Some symptoms are more telling than others. Gastro problems generally point to milk products or gluten. Wheezing is a classic symptom of sulfite intolerance. It takes a lot of diligence, documentation, and knowing your body to figure out intolerances. Although symptoms can resemble an allergy, the body's reaction is different so allergy testing does not pick them up. The blood tests some people get on their own are a crap shoot. They are very unreliable and may or may not clue you in to what is going on. If you can drink wine, it's not sulfites. Acid reflux can also cause wheezing. Even if you have no other symptoms of reflux. >> If it isn't diagnosed through allergy testing, how is it diagnosed?>
