Chashme mean through the vision.

Bad in Urdu or Farsi mean bad

Door means far away

Taken together, it means that a vision that you would like to be near and

never far.

i,e, someone beautiful.

Well I always thought it meant, 'kisi ki nazar na lagey' as the song goes.

No,please don't expect me,Ravin,...to answer..that...

For we...South Karnatics,.,.Hindi..is..as foreign..as...Latin,..and so..Urdu..is

still miles..away...

No,but,..as..Anshu pointed,..I too had..a gut feeling,..it meant

probably,... " Ward off,someone.. from the evil's eyes... "

I..must..appreciate..Kishoreda..who..has..broken..down..the word..literally..to

explain..THE TRUE..MEANING TO US..ALL...

Thanks..Kishoreda..

BTW...Ravin,...Kisne..Aapko..ya..Aapne..Kisko...YEH....KEHNE..KI...KOSHISH..KI.,\

is my immediate..question..to U.??

Bye.

Dear All,

Chashme -bad-door is actually a sort of charm literally translated it will be

Bhagwan tumhe buri nazar se bachaye.

It is very common to see the grand parents of sick infants saying that Bachhe ko

kisi ki nazar lag gai hai.And yes there are methods to remove the effects

according to them and paediatricians do not get the credit for treated patients

Anshu,

you are almost correct. " buri nazar door rahe " or " buri nazar se bachaye " will

really mean that kisi ki nazar na lage...

Thanks Kishore (and everyone else who replied) :-)

That was my daughter's question after she heard a remix of the song :-D

I take it now that it means " a sight you would like to keep close (or close

to the heart) and never far from you " as Kishore says...

And could also mean " kissi ki buri nazar na lage " . The latter actually I had

eliminated because it is already said in the same line in the song " teri

pyari pyair surat ko kissi ki nazar na lage... chashme buddoor... "

So I'm more inclined to believe Kishore... it implies " someone or something

extremely beautiful " through the literal translation " a sight you would like

to keep close (or close to the heart) and never far from you " .

I hope I got it right?

:-)

I think you can interpret it both ways depending on the context. The movie

" Chashme Buddoor " uses it in the sense of a beautiful vision.
