Guest guest
Dear Shyam, I don't think the Mahatma ever saw himself as a saint. He was a crusader for a cause that he believed in. His methods were strange, new and incomprehensible to many - which is probably why he was (and is) both revered and reviled. As for the statement on the Jews, I am not sure whether I agree with Arun Gandhi. Having stayed in Riyadh, I found that the Arab hatred for Jews is to be seen to be believed. Calling anyone a Jew is the worst insult possible. They even black out Isreal from maps- you would know all this, Shyam. Surrounded by Arab countries, Isreal is bound to be insecure - and as a consequence, aggressive. The holocaust was not hyped. We still have survivors of the holocaust around, and it is belittling them to pass it off as hype. Last March, I had visited a concentration camp that had been preserved - in Munich. I was ready to throw up by the time I came out - my faith in humanity was severely eroded. After that, I realised that the human race needs constant reminders of the holocaust, if only to keep us wary of our own tendencies to cruelty. Arun Gandhi's decision to step down was his own personal decision. I would respect him for that, even if I do not agree with his views. Guest guest
Well again this is a very contentious topic-and I am not sure given the past events on this group, its the right place to discuss this. There are lots of justifications on either side for what is going on in the Middle East today. It is a fact that until the Holocaust Arabs and Jews lived together in relative peace in the Middle East. The Holocaust was a European doing -in fact supported by the US and the UK who not only knew what was happening but also prevented Jewish migration to them allowing refugees to escape.Whether that is enough to justify what is happening in Palestine today I dont know.Over the last few yrs I have been an avid reader of history and the world situation and I read a fantastic book by Glain recently-he has been a Wall street Journal correspondent for the Middle East for many yrs and he used his contacts to give us an insight into the Economy of the Arab world-what we see from the outside as petrodollar economy is confined to a very few countries-most of the Arab world-Syria Jordan Egypt Lebanon do not even have a basic banking system and an economy to speak of-under corrupt rulers propped up by the West-the common man is so poor and future so futile-and Palestine among the corruption and blockades is a doomed place!! So if you make life so terrible that its not worth living and you have nothing to lose anymore-terrorism seems a very appealing route to take with all its promises of Glory etc...No one can forget and should not forget the Holocaust...but also until the US and the World look at the Middle East in a new light we would not see the end of the troubles!! 82 To: mgims@...: prabhadesikan@...: Fri, 1 Feb 2008 00:12:44 -0800Subject: Re: The Other Gandhi..Cant..Speak the truth... Guest guest
OP gupta sir, it is surprising how truth hurts even small little individuals like me in a small stage too. Try telling a patient that gas is all but gas you do not have to take pantoprazole for gas, or you do not need to treat high uric acid unnecessarily, or even that you must take fruits for treating DM, see the laughter it evokes, the loathing it creats in 'professional doctors' faces, you,d know why truth is so difficult. how can I try non attachement! regards dr ashok sinha op gupta wrote: Edmund Burke said " magnanimity in politics is not eldom the truest wisdom; and a great empire and little minds go ill together " this is the present state of mind of the American politicians. Guest guest
Prabh, You are so right about the Mahatma... That's why he called his crusade as " My experiments with truth " because he knew how difficult it is in this day and age to lead an honest and truthful life....We tend to lie about little things everyday...but then its so hard not to do that. I find myself telling Aaditya that we are going to Disney (when I know that we are not) just to pacify him... its so easy to lie.The path of truth is indeed very difficult! Then how do you maintain your integrity? Everybody has to find their own answer to this question. What seems to be a little white lie may be dishonesty to the other. One should have their own benchmark about far they want to go on this issue and carve out their own path, so that they can sleep peacefully every night with a clear conscience.
