Guest guest
Unfortunately Shyam, as far as the WWW is concerned you just can't sensor everything... So I don't really see a point in such sensorship... and therefore don't agree to that view. Guest guest
Censorship.....Internet..... opens a can of worms, isnt it? When I was reading this discussion, I could not help but to stop everything I was doing and key in a few lines expressing what I feel about this topic. I am no parent, but I see this as a relevent problem for all the teens, their parents, their families and for society in general. So, these are my two cents on the topic: What not to watch? This is a big debate faced by families not only here in the states, but all over the world. I know that as a possible " remedy " to the problem, goverments all over the world are trying to ban websites and set up monitoring. But now, the thing is that do we need a " big brother " kind of system to censor every single pornographic website that comes up? These kind of websites are like wild mushrooms, they spring up unwanted no matter how bad the authorities try to block them.. they come up under a new guise, under a new name to cater to their " followers " ... ultimately, thats how they earn their bread and butter. Technology is a scary thing, its a double edged sword, on one end, it is a source of invaluable information to everyone and on the other hand, it can be a source for all the filth that everyone.. young old, teens can be influenced with. I cant speak for adults, as they are old enough and it is expected that they use their discretion, but all these websites can be a source of all kinds of crap for our teens, who are already in a very impressionable age. I see programs on TV where they catch " predators " .. adult men who go in chat rooms to meet up for sex with teenage girls, and it is just so sickening. Police are vigilant, but I think its just the tip of the iceberg, and no matter how strict censorship is, how can the governement prevent all these chat rooms and what goes on there? I am all for social democracy but I have mixed views on government censorship. I think the main job of a governemnt is watch and protect the society, and oh yes, if there are certain websites that can damage the fabric of the society, then its the governemnts job to enforce some rules. But again I wonder, will all the corrupt goverment machinery sitting there at the center, how much of it will they be able to do. Also I believe that the main job of a goverment is to provide us with our basic needs like shelter, infrastructure, jobs, and security, and we have a long way to go in that department, so how much more can we expect from the " babus " in the sarkari offices? We have reached a time when we cannot imagine our lives without the world wide web. There are several websites that our kids are exposed to on a day to day basis. And believe me, most of the problems are not due to the pornographic websites, but mainly in our day to day chat rooms, and social networking sites like orkut, myspace, facebook, etc. I think its such a boon to us expatriates to have such websites, because with their aid, we can keep in touch with our friends, and families and yes, it makes the distances grow shorter and makes the world smaller and more accessible for us. Therefore, these networking websites are not evil, and 99% of people make judicious use of these means. However, there are 1% perverts who are out there, and I agree that we need to protect the younger generation from them, but it makes me wonder if banning the website is a solution? Because I think that if that particular website is banned, then in due course of time, something else will come up. Also the scary thing is that if a mentally sick person knows what he wants, then he has enough technology on his hands to get what he wants. But again, with times, should we just continue to live in fear or empower ourselves with tools that can help us take charge of the situation? I think a plausible solution to this problem could be summed up in two words " Parental Controls " . Now a days, most of newer computers (I have a mac, and I know it comes with one) are equipped with settings, where you can set up an account on the computer for your kids to log on, and you can set limits as to how long can they surf on the net, and also set what kind of websites they can watch. Plus, you can create a log about what websites your children have surfed, so you can keep tabs on them and monitor what they do. Several cable companies have parental controls for cable TV and I think thats a good thing after watching all the junk thats on TV now a days. I feel that after parents set up parental controls, they can feel more relieved that they can watch over their kids and make sure that they are protected from everything bad thats out there. These are just my opinions and I am not trying to counter the views expressed by anyone in this group, since I agree with everyone that with advances in technology and with the world at our fingertips, we also have a whole pandora's box on our hands which has " not so nice things " . There is no one correct solution to this problem, but this is such a rampant problem in the society and I know it has already engulfed the US and it wont be long before parents in India would also face similar problems. It would be interesting to know what everyone else feels about this relevent problem, so I would appreciate your input on this matter. cheers Ameet 1993 > Yes...Censorship is very much essential,I feel dear Ravin..in these > days..of so much of Uncensored stuff.... that goes..on the net...unchecked. > > Here..and in most of the Gulf countries..and even in China..I am told.., > all the debatable net sites..and Porn related sites..are blocked..which I > feel is the ideal thing to do...in a Web World,..which r accessed not just > by u and me..and others,..but kids..on a daily basis....and U with 2 young > daughters,..and me..with one...need to know that well.,..to safeguard their > interest. > Others...out here may state.. Guest guest
Ameet you have expressed your views wonderfully. I totally agree with you that the home PC/TV can be made safe, however kids here are used to going to cyber cafes too. As far as exposure to porn is concerned - it has to happen one time or the other, it can even be in school in the form of magazines or DVDs/Cds/MMS's and what not. The issue of importance is however " hunting " of teens by " predators " . Yes that is one thing that needs constant monitoring. However, blanket banning, that is surely a NO-NO...
