Hi All,

Just over this sickness and we're hit with the next challenge. Hi is

going for his Hamstring lengthening + Botox in hips operation on the

12th February and will be in a hip Spica cast for 6 weeks+, intensive

phyio after this.

Then he's going for Salivary Duct Relocation operation in March or

April - depends on how quick he bounces back from Hamstring operation.

He's tried the drug route for 4 years with little success, if any. 20

bibs+ a day.

Any of you had experience of either of these ops? As I would love some

hints or tips.

One worry I have is how do we get him home in the car with a full cast

on?

Seems like we'll all be in solitary confinement until the cast is off

as there is no way he'll fit in his existing wheelchair with cast?

Carver was in a modified Spica when he had his left hip done a couple years ago.

The enabled us to use regular diapers on him. A lot of the loop members answered

my question about how to change and diaper him, they had a lot of useful

information. Concerning the car seat, the hospital sent us home with a special

one that is designed for spica casts, and we also got a loaner wheelchair, one

with the legs straight out. Sitting was not a problem for Carver, we kept him

well cushioned and changed his position frequently. It looks a little ackward on

the side with one leg protruding up into the air, but he tolerated the postion

well.

Best wishes and good luck,

and Carver

Hi .

had his hamstrings and adductors lengthened when he was 3(he is 6

now) and he gets botox injections in all 4 extremities and salivary

glands every 6 months. He never had to wear a spica cast, he wore soft

splints called knee immobilizers for a couple of months. 3 years later

he still has great range and no scissoring. We did serial casting

(both legs, knees to toes) once after botox injections and it was a

waste of time. He got no lasting result from it and those casts added

another 5-10 lbs to the already 45 I have to carry. I wouldn't do it

again unless absolutely necessary. The increased PT is really all we

needed. stands and walks in a gait trainer for extended periods

of time now. It seems there is always a new challenge around the bend

though, his arches are almost non-existent and his feet are beginning

to turn (supinate), so unfortunately it is the same story for most of

us, get over one hurdle and the next one's right up the path.

Good luck.

Hi ,

First of all, I am so glad to know that Daire is on the mend. You

all remain in our thoughts and prayers!

, 5, BPP, did have the submandibular salivary gland rerouting

done in July 2006. He also had the sublingual glands removed at the

same time as that has been proven to reduce the post operative

complications of ranulas forming.

While came through the rerouting without any issues, it did not

help with his drooling. He was still as wet post-surgery as he was

pre-surgery....SO....in July 2007 we had the submandiublar glands

totally removed and the left parotid gland ligated. Voila! That did

the trick for . He is no longer constantly drooling...which

makes him a much happier little boy. He wasn't aware of the drool

until he would feel it hit his shirt, see it on the table in front of

him or see it in the mirror...then it would upset him. At any rate,

he now is wet enough to eat properly and doesn't have any issues with

keeping hydrated. I think his eating skills have improved as he

isn't so filled with saliva so now he is able to sense what he has in

his mouth and chew it more effectively.

If you want my opinion, in hindsight, I wish we hadn't put him

through the rerouting and had just gone for the removal.

I know that Riley's mom, , may have something to add to this

as Riley had the surgery around the same time as . Last I spoke

to her, she felt that Riley's surgery was a success as well.

Good luck with everything. Keep us posted on Daire's progress.

Best,

Krista
