We are at Hershey PA on vacation--we arrived Monday and are here until saturday.

My 12 yo DD OCD is going crazy and ruining this trip. She keeps making

comments...for example we were in a gift shop and she kept repeating " I

stole " ...ugh. Then we were in line at the park and they were searching my bag

and she said she had a gun...luckily noone heard her....I could cry. I was so

hoping for better on this trip. Her OCD centers around irrational

thoughts...this week it is so bad :(

I am praying the next few days get better before saturday...plus we have a 5 hr

car ride home saturday

My daughter went through a phase where she kept thinking/fearing that she stole

things from stores too.  Luckily it passed.  Sorry your trip isn't going

well...  I don't have much advice but maybe it helps to know I've been there

too.

I feel your pain. My trip to Disney world wasnt good either and we took a train

from PA! Also trip to Wildwood was no good fear of tidal waves and tsunamis it

truly can get the best of your heart and soul sometimes. I hope it turns around

for you on this trip!

Vacations are so exciting, but so much to process and

so much change. It is not predictable either.

I would reduce the places in Hershey you go. The more

predictable the better she may be able to cope.

I know I totally overwhelmed my daughter at Hershey. We

stayed at the Hershey Lodge which was too busy and too

much going on and I took her to the Hershey factory

which has so much going on and then we went to Hershey

park and went to the zoo in the same day.

Her anxiety was triggered and it just got worse. Wow. A nightmare.

I have learn to greatly reduce the exposures. It is hard though

my husband wants to see so much it sends our daughter

over the limit. What my daughter needs and what the rest

of the family wants to do are very different.

My daughter needs to stay at a place she can eat

in the room, like an extended stay hotel with a

small kitchen, she needs to go somewhere from 10-3

but then be in the room to rest and relax. She needs

to go maybe one place from 10-3 and that is it. Maybe

go back to the same place a few times in the week so

that the first time there is stress but the second and

third time it is better.

I know it is hard to meet the whole families needs. The trip

didn't work out how you expected but you can learn what

helps reduce her anxiety on vacation. Don't give up.

I was able to take my daughter to Phildelphia and we

rode the train and bus. She is so much better at age 13.

BUT I still keep trips short and limit the places we go and

so I do not push her over the edge.It is hard though

it can make a trip very boring. We are going to Washington DC

and my husband wants to stop in Baltimore on the way

down. I know my husband would like to see as much as he

can, but my daughter would do better stopping for a picnic

rather than all the exposure to so much stimulation, change,

people etc.

It is hard to please everyone. I have not been back to Hershey,

I take my daughter to a small amusement park in NJ. And we

go there enough she is very comfortable.

I am sorry you are/she is having a rough time. Question: can you tell us a few

GOOD things about the trip, or something she did that you were

happy/surprised/proud about?  Just trying to turn it into a positive

experience.  :)

Keeping it simple helps.  When you ask my kids what vacation they liked the

most, and what part of it, they would say when we went to visit my dad in

Colorado.  And the best part was going to play at different neighborhood

parks.  It was not taking a train to the top of a mountain, or anything else

big, but the parks!
