Guest guest
it does help Estate and Garage Sales Facebook Page www.estateandgaragesales.biz Subject: Re: dog to calm? To: Date: Tuesday, July 5, 2011, 1:30 PM I think animals can be very therapeutic. My dd has few friends, but she has an intense bond with one of our dogs and I think a relationship like that relieves stress, somewhat, and nourishes the spirit. I also think it's important for our kids to feel needed and to have the experience of taking care of someone/something instead of always being the one in need of care. On the other hand, a dog (like a child) is a huge responsibility and can require a lot of work, which often falls to the kid's parents. When you're already overwhelmed, that can be tough! If you go this route, I'd consider choosing a puppy or dog who is already house-trained and is reasonably well socialized. Also, make sure you have plenty of support, from other family members and others, in making sure the dog gets attention, exercise, etc. If you go through the SPCA, or another rescue shelter, or with a reputable breeder, they should help match you with the right dog. Hope this helps a little. Steph (who has 3 rescued dogs) (17 y/o dd with OCD, depression, anxiety, and Asperger's) > > > I am wondering if any of you have any thoughts on weather a dog can be helpful in calming the anxiety in OCD kids. Our 12 ds loves playing w/small dogs at friends houses and says it makes him feel better. I am not anti dog, I just feel over welmed w/kids, business and especially schooling issues related to OCD and do not need one more person/pet to take care of so we are hesitant to get one. The flip side is if it really was helpful, than my husband and I agree we should seriously consider it. So, I would love to hear other's experiences w/dogs/ocd kids and calming them. thanx .....................Larkellen ------------------------------------ Our list archives feature may be accessed at: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group// by scrolling down to the archives calendar . Guest guest
that is what I am thinking. I think we now just have to bite the bullet.......................... Estate and Garage Sales Facebook Page www.estateandgaragesales.biz Subject: Re: dog to calm? To: Date: Wednesday, July 6, 2011, 2:07 AM Our son loves our dog. She's helped him through some of the worst times with his OCD. She would lie on the sofa with him when he was completely overwhelmed and lick his tears away. She would snuggle up to him like that for hours. He has a lot of contamination fears, but they've never applied to her. I suspect it depends on the kid and the dog. It sounds like your son would be a good candidate for the right dog, since he said it makes him feel better. Guest guest
yep, we are thinking small but not ankle biter size and preferably not a huge barker, and one that it seems Paxton connects to.............................................Larkellen Estate and Garage Sales Facebook Page www.estateandgaragesales.biz Subject: Re: dog to calm? To: Date: Thursday, July 7, 2011, 3:02 PM Our dog helped my son(14) during his erp. He had contamination ocd, and while waiting it out, one of the first things he was able to touch was the dog. And she would sit with us, during the erp. So she has been a big help to us, but she was already in the household before the ocd. She is 3, and not high maintenance. Dogs are alot of work, especially puppies. Pups need constant care and attention. Also, research the breed of dog you would like. I teach a puppy class, and many times see people get breeds that don't match their livestyle. > > > I am wondering if any of you have any thoughts on weather a dog can be helpful in calming the anxiety in OCD kids. ------------------------------------ Our list archives feature may be accessed at: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group// by scrolling down to the archives calendar .
