Guest guest
Hi all, my grandson who is almost three is finally going to get his first evaluation on Thursday morning. I really wish that I could be there to support my step-daughter but I am in Mi and they are in Va. Her mother is going to be there though. My son-in-law is still in denial regarding there being ANY problem with Mason. Which is very frustrating to his mother-in-law, Tabatha's mom. I know that this is causing problems between them. I understand that denial is a part of the greiving process and that he has to grieve and will do it in his own time. I know that he will come around and be the stand up guy that he is. But my step-daughter is not getting the support that she needs from him right now and this is painful for her and for her mom. Any advice? If you are in the macomb county or even near the Macomb County we have a support group that meets this Thursday at 17 mile and Dodge Park. You can email me offline if you would like shybutcute599@... Guest guest
I am in Virginia and interested to know where the evaluation will take place and then i can tell you what to expect? i say this because i have done every single center in state and out of state while i was in denial at first... many are a waste of money and time and others are not supportive at all my husband and his entore family were against me at first, and then they started to take it out on me saying that i did this, it was my fault etc etc i think the best thing is to have him take her somewhere where other children her age are there... and he will be convinced ... i sent my husband one day to one of my daughter's art class, an he sat there and he could clearly see where my daughter was challenged Autism Eval. Guest guest
this evaluation is being done by one of the schools. I cannot remember which one, they live in Henrico Co. I know that they had originally spoken about getting an eval. at Children's Hospital. I am not sure why this change came about but I am just glad they are finally moving forward. He will be 3 in March and I know time is of the essence. their resouces are limited and perhaps insurance was a problem. I know one concern right now is that he is not eating. I went through a similar thing with my dd, she had major sensory issues with food. I also thought he may be having some gastrointestional issues and refusing to eat to avoid pain. I suggested trying the gfcf diet but they are having trouble just putting food on the table and can't afford the higher costs of gfcf foods. I feel so helpless being so far away. but I can't help that right now. Guest guest
the county will evaluate for academic purposes only and they will not diagnose since money is an issue here are a couple of suggestions but they both are in the DC area about 3 hours away 1. they can call the george washington university speech and hearing clinic and ask for their Mullen evaluation, its free because its administered by grad student under the supervision of two professors (i even think they pay you $50 for your time), the mullen covers expressive, receptive and pragmatic language, Gross and fine motor skills and some cognitive abilities as well. They also do what is called the ADOS which is a short test to correctly diagnose autism http://www.gwu.edu/~sphr/. i just did that for my 4 year old and loved it 2. as a second option you can contact NIH for one of their autism studies, i suggest that you email this person and ask her on how soon can you get the evaluation done (usually within 2 weeks) and this eval is pretty comprehensive, the down side is that it lasts several hours if you dont get done over few days (for them coming from Richmond area) however, its worth while to even try as its also free of charge and they do a follow up assessment every 6 months to see the progress pekarm@... of coure you can always have the mom email me if she needs more help or have questions Autism Eval. Guest guest
Hi Carol, It is nice that you have a diagnosis at a young age. This is such a nice age to establish attachment, social referencing, and using simple play to establish " relating " skills. I am a psychologist in Michigan and work closely with children on the spectrum. I give a workshop on using " sensory motor play " to establish an emotional connection with your child. It uses simple interactive play to engage the child is reciprocal play and teach the child to follow your lead and share " pleasurable experiences " with you. If you are interested, I can send you the power point presentation, as well as a list of 30 simple interactive play activities. If you email me at nasonbill@... I will attach the presentation and send it back to you. Bill > > > > Hi all, my grandson who is almost three is finally going to get > his > > first evaluation on Thursday morning.
