Guest guest
Hi , I don't know that our group advisors would know this. (notice I just posted Dr. Geller is stepping down) For myself, I want to say that the thyroid problem *could* be the cause of her OCD. I know of one group parent here, quite a while back, whose child got better after finding out he (think it was a he) had thyroid problems and they got it treated. Plus the thyroid can really affect mental health, not just physical. I found this 2005 study, just googling thryoid, ocd: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16190790 Just typing in for the search block - thyroid, ocd - or even thyroid, mental health, turns up a lot to read, and a lot of others asking the same questions. I would still think in this case it would be a matter of treating the thyroid and not indicating use of antibiotics, as with PANDAS. But I'm obviously no expert! If you find out any more, do share with us!! > > As I posted before my daughter had a sudden onset of OCD symptoms. As I have been researching OCD I was directed to the website pandaresourcenetwork.org on this website I found some interesting information that stated " other autoimmune illness may cause sudden onset ocd and other neuropsychiatric disorders....lyme disease, thyroid disease... " My daughter (this year) was dx'd with and autoimmune disease called Hoshimotos Thyroiditis. This is a thyroid disease. Her body produces antibodies that attack her thyroid, causing her thyroid to be either under or overactive. I am wondering if there is a dr associated with this group that might be able to answer if this thyroid disease and the antibodies that are attacking my daughters thyroid could any way be the cause of the ocd. > > > Thanks > >
Guest guest
My gut reaction (for what it's worth) is, that is very similar to what happens with PANDAS...the immune system makes a mistake and the antibodies attack the brain. It may not necessarily be " strep " and therefore technically " PANDAS, " but a faulty immune system could be to blame. If there is evidence of an infection (strep or otherwise), abx can help. If the immune system need to be " modulated, " maybe a steroid burst would help halt things in their tracks. IVIG may be appropriate as well. Obviously take this not as medical advice, but things to consider and ask an appropriate doctor. My advice would be to go to a doctor that truly understands PANDAS/PITAND/PANS (not just someone who is " open " to it, but someone who has treated A LOT of patients).
