I have used it with my son and I think it helps -- not an overwhelming amt, but

I'll take any improvements!

Subject: Anyone try N-Acetylcysteine ?

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone here has tried to treat OCD with N- Acetylcycteine? My

sons psychiatrist mentioned to me that some people use it for OCD. I have not

heard anyone talk about it here.

Right now my son is taking 8g of inositol a day. Which has helped so much! But

the psychiatrist thinks I need to get him up to 12g/ day for it to be

therapeutic. My son is 8 years old and weighs 72 lbs. The psychiatrist also told

me he would have never told me to try inositol but since I am and have seen

improvement to keep him on it. He did admit he was very conventional doctor.

thanks,

Layla

Layla, it you use the search feature for past posts, you should find some

earlier posts on it. I recall it's been a topic a couple of times, probably in

this past year.

I don't think weight matters in how much inositol you take, probably more just

what dose works best. was in 6th grade when we started and maybe about

your son's weight. Don't recall his weight (he's 22 now) but he's always been

skinny, probably around 120lbs now, tall & skinny. Anyway, I didn't even

consider weight when we started, just wanted a dose that I felt would be a good

indicator. We started at around 14 grams (building up to that) and I'd have

been willing to go higher too. But he took it 4x a day when OCD was bad

(sometimes more) for a while, and that was around 14grams I belive. And later

on down the road, dropped to 3x a day, then much later he was just 1x a day.

Took it all through middle school.

My daughter has been on NAC for a while now, and we just stopped it because it

hasn't seemed to make a difference. Her big help is the Anafranil that she has

been on for 3 years.

Re: Anyone try N-Acetylcysteine ?

Yes, we tried N-Acetylcysteine quite seriously, gave it a good trial over time.

We saw absolutely no change or improvement. Hope it works for you though.

I've been giving 2400mg to my daughter, 1200mg in the morning and 1200mg at

night (2 pills each time) for over three months now.  I also take it.  My

daughter no longer pulls her hair out (coincidence or NAC?), and my asthma has

improved (another of its many uses).  The University of Minnesota did a clinical

trial on it with regards to hair pulling, and they are softly testing it for

cutting and her psychiatrist feels that 3000 mg would be the correct dosage,

regardless of weight.  Amazon.com has some pretty decent information about it

and its many uses.

I started taking it because it is over the counter and I try to take everything

my kiddo takes that's over the counter so I can check the side-effects.  It

gives us a stomach ache.  I understand that it takes quite a while before it

starts to work for hair pulling, although it cleared my lungs within 24 hours.

I have not heard about its overall impact on OCD, but if hair pulling is still

in the OCD family, clinical trials apparently suggest that it is effective. I

have not read any papers about it, though.
