To quote a book " FC is deceptively simple technique that apparently works by bypassing a complex network of muscle/brain coordination necessary for normal verbal and physical communication. Soma and Tito have a tecnique they use called the rapid prompt method and there is another by a Mom who watched Soma's method and developed her own method on the internet with manual...Let me know and I can look up that infor for you. The manual was free to download and explained alot about the typing method to talk for people that are basically nv. We use many different methods to help Darby communicate with us and the world.... Guest guest
Thanks. Kayla is verbal but she doesn't say exactly what she wants and she loses the words. I was wondering if she had another way to communicate (computer) maybe she could tell us what's going on inside when she is upset or angry, etc. She can't explain things to us. She can tell us what she wants and needs most of the time. but not if it a full body hug with pressure, or if someone is bothering her what was said. The important stuff. She totally understands every single thing that is said to her. She is learning to read. She had memorized so many words but sometimes see will see a word and use a similar word instead. I would love to have her be able to share and I think she would love it too. > > Dear Taijij: > > FC is facilitated Communication developed by Rosemary Crossley and Doug > Biklen, PhD of Syracuse University,NY. Guest guest
Taijij: Do some research on communicating thru typing as many people with autism that talk say that writing is easier to talk about feelings etc. One mom said on the CNN special that her son who is quite verbal is able to email her and tell her more that way than face to face interaction. I forgot her name she was on Oprah with and she was/is a black actress with a famous football player husband....You are on the right track I would say.... Guest guest
I saw that show, her name is Holly Pete . I have been thinking about getting her a laptop forever, just for the communication issue. Maybe I will do it for her bday in June. Guest guest
Thanks but I probably should have mentioned the licking me (ewww) and other annoying behaviour we had to work through first. In the beginning, everytime we tried something she didn't want to do, she would do something designed to get herself into trouble so that she would be punished and then wouldn't have enough time to do the work. The thing she forgot was that homeschool can go all day if we need to. She gradually gave up the delaying tactics and most days is happy to sit down and do the work. It also helped that I had no choice - the school she'd been in was no longer appropriate and there was nowhere else to go. I'm sorry if I my email glossed over the hard stuff. It's been a very positive experience so far for both of us - but it hasn't been easy. Re: I need a break but I just can't get one/heading for burnout So they're treating her like she's stupid, I'm willing to bet. It's hard to know what's in there with some of the behaviors. I wish there was some good way we could find to bridge the gap between the behaviors/lack of communication & being able to know what's in there. I really wonder if/when we homeschool if Allie's abilities will open wide if I can structure learning toward her interests. Guest guest
I looked into that very seriously and almost bought one. But I discovered it wasn't compatible with our software. So i didn't get it. I was very disappointed, this was a great opportunity but it would have been a waste for us. I really need to save the money and bite the bullet. I know she loves computers. Guest guest
Have you thought about using an external keyboard with the laptop? To protect my laptop from the kids it sits on a shelf about 3 inches off the desk and I plug a usb keyboard and mouse in for the kids. Saved me a disaster a couple of times. Guest guest
Haven't slept in weeks so my brain isn't working properly. I am having a hard time picturing what you are saying to do. Are you saying, use my laptop and let her plug in with a keyboard to it? How did you secure your lap top so that it won't fall if she pulls the keyboard? I don't have a desk for my work space. Well, that's not exactly true. I have another computer on a lovely desk that my 17 yr old son took over. We aren't ever allowed near that computer. That's another reason I was thinking about getting her a laptop. I just don't have enough room in my house to set up another desk. I am terrified that she will drop it.
