Guest guest
Home visits can be very helpful, but your daughter has to agree to at least try it. If she is completely refusing, it seems like this is not the right time--especially if she is making improvement with the current plan. And, yes the home visits are more expensive. (mom w/OCD, 11.5 dd yo w/OCD, 9 yo dd w/ tic disorder) ________________________________ To: Sent: Saturday, October 15, 2011 9:23 AM Subject: Experience with home visits by therapist? Hi everyone, Does anyone have experience with having your therapist come to your home to do exposure with your child? Our therapist keeps mentioning that she offers home visits to do extensive exposure work (basically, " contaminating " the entire house and then doing exposure with our 10-year-old). As she explained it, there would be no " safe " place for my daughter, so she would not be able to avoid her fears by avoiding her bedroom, for example. When I asked her for more info, she said that ideally we'd be doing these types of visits twice a month. My daughter is dead-set against this. She says it feels like an invasion of privacy to have the therapist come here and prefers that my husband and I do the exposure homework with her. I'm concerned about the cost, too. Because we would have to pay for travel time, the fee would be 3-4 times an office visit. Due to some other issues, this is a huge concern right now. Since my daughter is showing steady improvement with weekly therapy sessions and homework (no meds at this point), I'm questioning whether home visits are necessary or whether we can safely continue without them. Guest guest
I agree with . Yay for your daughter, working on exposures and making progress! Sounds like you do have a good OCD therapist too, and not all make home visits. Good that it is available in case there is a point later that your daughter could benefit from one. > > Home visits can be very helpful, but your daughter has to agree to at least try it. Guest guest
Thanks for your email, Chris! I have been hesitant to push my daughter into a home visit, especially since she IS making progress and has such a good attitude about doing her exposure assignments. I think we'll hang tight for now and see how things unfold. > > > > Home visits can be very helpful, but your daughter has to agree to at least try it. Guest guest
Bonnie, I agree that home therapy is great; we have had several home visits a few years ago. But, as you said the patient must be willing. (mom w/OCD, 11 yo dd w/OCD, 9 yo dd w/tic disorder) ________________________________ To: Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 2:41 PM Subject: Re: Experience with home visits by therapist? A few thoughts.... The patient must be WILLING to do the exposures in the home (sound like your therapist must work with her on this - put it on the hierarchy list) I don't think it's something you have to do more than once a month or so unless a lot of problems arise. You can follow her lead the rest of the time I might be the minority, but I am all for therapists seeing their clients in a nonclinical setting at least once in a while. I think over the years the therapists we've seen have not really appreciated my son's struggles because they couldn't assess how much it impacts his functioning and quality of life. Even when they saw some symptoms or discussed feelings, they never saw how those things affected his ability to play, learn, or even eat. Surveys are helpful, but nothing beats a well trained eye on behaviors that occur instead of those that are recalled in session... Just my 2 cents! Guest guest
Thanks, Bonnie! We are fortunate in that our therapist seems to be very aware of how bad things can get at home. The stories she has shared have help us put our daughter's OCD in perspective - it stinks, but it could be much worse, so we are counting our blessings. My daughter is willing to do exposure at home. She's just been resistant to doing it with the therapist vs. me. She feels it's an invasion of her privacy, so I guess we'd better get to the bottom of THAT issue before we tackle home visits. Thanks so much, > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > Does anyone have experience with having your therapist come to your home to do exposure with your child? > > > > Our therapist keeps mentioning that she offers home visits to do extensive exposure work (basically, " contaminating " the entire house and then doing exposure with our 10-year-old).
