My son is 14. He was diagnosed 2 years ago with OCD and anxiety. has

been on 20 mg of prozac for 2 years and has been doing " okay " . Not great at

times. Whenever we have a transition from a new sport or new school

year/semester, he struggles. Well, about 3 weeks ago I mentioned to our family

doctor that is always nervous. The OCD, such as intrusive thoughts, are

doing okay, but every day and night he tells me he feels nervous. The doctor

had us double the dose. That was 3 weeks ago. This week has been really really

bad for anxiety. Does anyone else have any experience on increasing the prozac

to 40mg and having the anxiety increase. What did you do?

When our son's Fluoxetine (generic of prozac) was increased from 20 mg to 40,

his behavior took a turn for the worse...more anxious, kind of " wound up "

constantly, etc. We then decreased to 30 mg and he calmed down. He has been at

30 mg for quite some time now....at times I have wondered if trying to increase

it again would be beneficial (when his anxiety seems to be heightened or because

he weighs a lot more now than when he first started 30 mg.) But he is on 3 other

meds as well, so to be honest, I don't really know how they tell when one is

working or not and which needs to be increased!!

I would ask your doctor is decreasing it to 30 mg would help.

We did really well last year with 30 mg. Fluox.,30 mg. Adderall XR. Now this

year OCD kicked in badly so we have been increasing Fluox. At 40, no help. At

50, no help. The plan is to raise it to max. 60 mg. but since he is not seeing

any help with the OCD, I am reluctant to go to 60. He started the Busbar as an

add on and that does calm him at night anyway. So calm, he is not too eager to

do his homework. I have not seen increase in anxiety with the Fluox.like you

describe. Sometimes though he seems more depressed when I first increase it. My

sister has had success with Fluox. for her depression. Maybe it is your son's

makeup and maybe another med. would work better for the anxiety. It is hard to

try dif. ones and that is why I am thinking we will just try to get through the

end of the year and maybe try another one in the summer.
