Guest guest
Dear Listmates, My 15 year old son with OCD and Asperger's needs intensive treatment for his OCD (we live in the San Francisco Bay Area). What is the difference between the efficacy of treatment at a residential center like Memorial versus an intensive outpatient center? Would treatment at a residential center take less time than treatment at an outpatient center? The connection between the providers and the patient is critical, but can you really evaluate the connection based on one meeting with them? Also, I've asked the intake coordinator at for parent references, but she declined due to HIPAA privacy rules. I've heard many good things about & McClean (my son doesn't meet the 16 yr old minimum age requirement for McClean), but haven't heard much about outpatient centers. I'd appreciate any feedback or advice. Thank you, Jill
Guest guest
I was just talking to my dental hygenist about . Her brother has been there twice and had good experiences. He was 30 the first time and 33 the second. His issues were with being so anxious, he could not leave his house. He had no success with anything prior to . He worked on driving both times and told her he had daily homework. He said that the first time he didn't stay long enough (stayed 3 weeks) so the second time he stayed 3 months. She said this xmas was the first time that he was able to drive to her parents to celebrate xmas with his family. I don't know about sleeping there but her brother stayed in a hotel and attended the sessions during the day. > ** > > > > Dear Listmates, > > My 15 year old son with OCD and Asperger's needs intensive treatment for > his OCD (we live in the San Francisco Bay Area). > > What is the difference between the efficacy of treatment at a residential > center like Memorial versus an intensive outpatient center? Guest guest
Hi Jill, I live in the Bay Area too. Three years ago, my son (now 17) spent 5 months at . Prior to that he'd spent most of the summer attending an outpatient progam in San (four hours a day, M-F, for five weeks). Both are excellent programs, but it was the residential treatment that worked for him. I believe saved his life. Feel free to email me off-line if you'd like to talk more. Guest guest
For my dd intensive inpatient was necessary, life changing and also life saving. She spent 60 days inpatient. My dd really needed to be in a different environment to get better. She had tried many other therapies and therapists prior, including intensive outpatient and it just wasn't enough for her. My dd had been ill for a very long time, and was basically nonfunctional. She hadn't been able to attend school for over 3 years. She also had comorbid diagnoses and needed the frequency for which she saw the pdoc inpatient to finally get her med cocktail right. Good luck, Stormy ________________________________ To: Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 10:42 AM Subject: Intensive Treatment Programs - Residential vs Out-Patient  Dear Listmates, My 15 year old son with OCD and Asperger's needs intensive treatment for his OCD (we live in the San Francisco Bay Area). Guest guest
Hi Jill, Our 14 yr old dd was in rogers for four months this fall. Much of her OCD revolves around morning and bedtime routines. We tried outpatient with no progress. Her OCD had gained too much control over her and the outpatient treatment time was just not enough to help her. She was missing school, withdrawing from any family activities and her world was getting smaller and smaller. It is not easy. Once my dd was there and they began to work on making her hierarchy, the depth of her OCD was much greater than we realized. She had hidden so much, we had no idea. Living 24/7 residence uncovers everything. So is it shorter in residency? For our dd I believe it was more thorough. At there is a coordinated team of people working with your child all following the same treatment plan. Your child also has group of peers who " get it " . They not only support you but also challenge you when you are slacking. Also, they have to work on their social skills as a result. Many of these kids are emotionally/socially immature and need the support and guidance. The attitude of the staff is extremely hopeful and confident. They have seen huge changes take place in residents and they speak with so much confidence your child will begin to believe... " hey maybe I can get better " . It may not be for everyone and we were extremely fortunate that our insurance covered most of it. She is back in school but still struggles. There are ups and downs but she has tools to use, a track record of success, and she is holding her head up with pride. The wait to get in is L O N G. It took us 5 months. Best wishes to you. You may email me or call offline if you would like more information. > > > Dear Listmates, > > My 15 year old son with OCD and Asperger's needs intensive treatment for his OCD (we live in the San Francisco Bay Area). > > What is the difference between the efficacy of treatment at a residential center like Memorial versus an intensive outpatient center?
