Guest guest
Hi Judy, I have a 14 yr old dd with ocd that cuts as well. Her doctors still have not been able to figure out if her cutting is attributed to ocd or something else. She used to skin pick, which the doctors all felt was ocd related, and it turned to cutting.I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. Hugs Judy  > > My 14 year-old daughter, diagnosed with OCD a couple of years ago, has received treatment and is doing really well in a lot of ways. Her hierarchy was 100+ long and she has completed about 75% of this hierarchy, mostly while at Memorial Hospital. One thing that seems to persist, however, is skin cutting. We've had her evaluated, and it seems that the cutting is OCD related: feeling the strong urge and a wave of anxiety until she has cut (her skin). She doesn't do other " cutting behaviors, " such as carry glass in he pocket for the first opportunity. She will use whatever is handy in her space when the urge arises: pencils, nails, and other sharp available things; of course we've locked up scissors, knives, and razors. Of course this is horrifying, and very difficult for us to treat. > > Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone tried hypnosis for this type of OCD behavior? Ideas for ERP with this?  > > Thanks for your help! > > Judy > >
Guest guest
My dd used to pick skin when she was in 1st grade. She picked at the skin by her mouth. She used to bite her nails, but quit doing that and went to picking her skin near her mouth. That lastest most of that year until it moved on to something else. For awhile this summer it was picking her head. At least that didnt leave marks on her face... On rare occasion he could cut or use a needle to poke his skin. I think that for him, these behaviors were anxiety-releasing. Somehow, the tension he had been feeling would be relieved after picking, poking, or cutting. I never really attributed these behaviors directly to OCD, other than the anxiety it created in general. Once his anxiety had been lessened through ERP (specially targeted to his OCD symptoms of sexual obsessions), the other behaviors got better too. Hope this helops.
