A lot of the dairy's I work with use RFID tags as a

herd managment tool. Saves a bunch of time, when

giving cows shots. I think the big push was for

tracking BSE, or TB. And I could see its place for

that. cost on an RFID is a few bucks. I dont see the

need for the average small farm needing a wand and lap

top. Large herds use them to keep track, move and

doctor cattle. The average small farm knows there cows

on a personal basis. If BSE is found in a slaughter

house it should be traced back to the farmer same goes

for TB or any other illness that people can contract.

I think it has its place but as with any government

involvement thay always seem to go beyond the true

need and screw it all up.

As for the comment on the cloning, you will never see

cloned animals as a major food source, what you will

see is the offspring of cloned animals. Some of the

best genetics will be cloned and used through AI,

embryo transfer or natural service. At $16,000.00 to

produce a live clone thats a pretty costly $.99 cheese

burger at Mc D's. There is still a long way to go with

cloned animals they still don't have it right. They

can get a live calf after a bunch of dead and deformed

calves, but even the ones that are cloned don't seem

to be as good as the the cow that was cloned. Lots

have arthrites, and early death. And are not as

productive even thoe they are an exact copy.
