Guest guest
My son has not had this that I am aware of, but I have heard of ocd due to high levels of histimine -- thus I would assume this is allergy as antihistimines are used for treatment of the allergies. Maybe google high histimine level and ocd. in WA To: Sent: Thursday, April 5, 2012 2:46 PM Subject: Can allergies cause OCD?  My daughter is having a relapse and I am trying to be proactive while I wait for her neurology appointment. (Checking out the PANDAS possibility) Her last episode started late March/Early April. Same with this time. I am wondering if typical Allergies to enviromental stuff (plants, grass, etc) can cause OCD/Anxiety to flare up?? Has anyone tested their kids thinking something similar? It just seems strange it's the exact time of year (beginning of spring). She did wonderful through Fall & Winter. No major issues.. some small lingering stuff. Any thoughts? Guest guest
It's interesting that you bring this up. I have diligently recorded my 9.5 yr old's OCD habits and thoughts. I noticed that he was diagnosed feb of last year and seemed to have come back around the same time this year. But his OCD has always been mild and under when it foes flare up. I too wonder if allergies are a trigger. We live in the bay area where it is usually high at this time. He usually sneezes, itchy eyes, even hives, around this time. I also wonder if this is a combo of seasonal affective disorder.... Guest guest
Over the years in this group, many parents have commented about this too, allergies and an increase with OCD. 's OCD would increase with a fever, take a few weeks to settle back down to " normal " level of OCD (wow, the word " normal " with OCD!) > > My daughter is having a relapse and I am trying to be proactive while I wait for her neurology appointment. Guest guest
My thoughts...I have a child with PANDAS. She also has Lyme disease. Never thought she had allergies (no typical symptoms) until the pandas diagnosis and then we realized that everything was messing up her immune system, including allergies. I think it was really a cumulative affect. For her, the lyme came first. Then the strep and exacerbations of ocd due to that. Then the H1N1 shot messed her up. Eventually colds and even allergies caused a worsening of symptoms. I think her immune system was overloaded and things that had not been allergens for her became allergens because her immune system was not functioning correctly. So, long story, short, Yes, I believe allergies can cause a worsening of ocd symptoms. It’s complicated though. I highly recommend you see someone who has treated MANY kids with PANDAS though, no matter how far you have to travel. Can’t say it enough. It’s scary, I know. Been there, done that. Seemed impossible to me once, now we travel 5 hours for a lyme literate dr. and 6 for our pandas specialist. Worth everything including the debt.
