Guest guest
Kids with Asperger's sometimes make eye contact, and their social skills can be quite good when sitting one on one with an adult. Adults who knew my Aspergian daughter, when she was little, were often surprised to find she had " issues " because she seemed like a confident and delightful conversationalist. Her Asperger's and Nonverbal Learning Disability became clear when she was with kids her own age or in a social situation that was novel and unpredictable. In those situations she couldn't read social cues at all and just withdrew in frustration. I don't mean to sound negative. But if Asperger's is a concern, and you want to rule it out, I'd go to someone who has expertise in this area rather than an OCD specialist. Choose someone who will get to know your son over a period of time rather than making a snap judgment in 30 minutes (I've seen this happen often -- it's like fast food drive-thru diagnosis :-( ) A good resource for you might be Tony Attwood's book on Asperger's Syndrome. Hope this helps a little (17 y/o dd with OCD, anxiety/depression, Asperger's & NVLD) > > We went to my sons OCD specialist and I brought up tha I hink he has many Aspergers traits, she didnt seem to agree because he makes eye contact, and she said is more high functioning then someone with Asperegrs as far as talking and social skills so who knows >
Guest guest
Still may fit nonverbal learning disorder - these kids are higher in functioning than AS kids. Guest guest
Wondering if the AS traits are there when OCD is not? If so, you might think more about something on the autistic spectrum or NLD.
