Guest guest
Hi. You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is Biomedical intervention and DAN? I have never heard of these unless it's called something else here. I would very much like to learn more about this. I want to be able to help nna the best I can. Guest guest
I wish you all the best. It seems ironic that although we know there are many children who have fallen victim to these problems, we often feel alone. Everytime my sweetie has a meltdown is public, I feel like I must be the only one facing this, but I certainly know better. Although she is usually verbal, my little one has repetitive behavior, no social skills, but her biggest thing is aggression. Please hang in there. pjrd67@... wrote: Hi. I just signed up for this group and I hope to get some good information and maybae not feel so alone. I have three kids all of which are in the autism spectrum. My youngest, nna, who is 9 has the most issues. She has been diagnosed with several things over the years including Rett, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and possibly Bipolar. So I really don't know what is really wrong with her. I'm hoping someone has a daughter sort of like mine. nna has severe mood swings, she rocks relentlessly, head bangs, bites, has speech but is somewhat hard to understand, has an IQ of 65, spits, has no social skills, doesn't tolerate any change, transitions are extremely hard for her, she acts like she doesn't hear me or when she does she thinks I said something else and gets mad when it's different. she can't separate fantasy from reality (she thinks cartoons are real and hates me because I won't get her stitch) She has seizures, she drools, she doesn't play with toys and she watches the same movie over and over. Her walking is clumsy and her ankles prolapse. She can only use her hands to write for a little bit, then she can't hold the pencil anymore. She is potty trained during the day (with some accidents) but not at night. She doesn't sleep all night even with Melatonin, she has severe tantrums, which include screaming, yelling, swearing and just not making any sense. She is small for her age, has had the Fundoplication done and has night feedings. She has had a Roux-En-Y done with a permanent J tube placed directly into her intestines because her stomach can't tolerate the feeds any more. She has Reflux and has the VNS for seizure control. She is also a big time wanderer. I had to change the locks on the doors because she kept getting up in the middle of the night and wandering outside. She can't tolerate loud noises or bright lights, going downtown causes severe meltdowns. At school she sits by herself in the cafeteria because she doesn't want to be around anyone. She loves cartoons and crazy frog, she has speech and PT at school and is in a behavioral class. she is definitely a handful. Guest guest
mark yes aggression was of the main issues that escalated greatly at age of 13 or so for me and caused of me to get locked away to mental places for much of the life of me. Now much of years later still can have of those cycling times of aggression if the overload is of present or the communication barrier is of intensified for me to others or from others to me. Guest guest
Pam, WELCOME to our group! I believe that you will feel right at home here with all the symptoms you described that nna has. I am sure that you know a lot because of your other 2 children's diagnosis. I wish you well in finding all the answers you are needing right now. There is a lot of support on this board. Do you do any biomedical interventions? Have you taken her to a DAN! practioner? Shanna ('s mom) > > Hi. Guest guest
DAN! stands for Defeat Autism Now! www.defeatautismnow.com (the website isn't that great) that sort of started with the Autism Research Institute. It's an attempt to bring autism researchers together from around the world to discuss most current understandings of the physiology of autism in an attempt to heal the bodies of those with autism because so many suffer from physical ailments associated with autism. There are a group of health care providers from around the nation (I think some around the world) who have attended conferences and attempt (some are horrible, some a great, a lot in between) to treat patients with autism-associated conditions. I've been in this over 6 yrs now. If I had it to do over again knowing then what I know now, I would find a way to get the funds (probably total around $5,000 or so) and take my daughter to either Dr. Bradstreet's clinic or Dr. Neubrander in NJ right off the bat. I've tried doing a lot of biomedical things with Allie over the years, she's been a good responder, some kids don't respond at all, but I could have saved Allie & I both a long time of researching, trying, and guessing. Just my thought, others may feel differently & are free to. BTW, if you ever consider seeing a DAN! I would highly recommend you get referrals from other parents first. As I said, some are horrible, some are out to profit on the autism explosion. I've found in general the best are those who have kids with autism, they seem to get what it's all about and are in general in it for far greater reasons that getting rich. HTH, Debi > > Hi.
