Hello everyone! I am super excited to join this group as I have felt really

isolated due to the issues my eldest son has. I am a mom to six kids; 3 bio's, 1

adopted and 2 foster. My eldest bio who is 12 years old has been recently

diagnosed with Asperger's, OCD, ADHD and disruptive disorder. I would like to

say that obviously we knew there were issues earlier on in his life but I was

extremely protective of him and wouldn't allow any labels. I withdrew him from

school half way through his second grade year and have homeschooled him ever

since. The OCD issues kinda seemed to come out of nowhere about a year or so ago

and then progressed rather quickly. Because of the Asperger's though it's hard

to know where one diagnosis ends and the other begins because they are all on

the spectrum together and Asperger's and OCD are so commonly liked together. We

recognize that we provided a lot of accommodations for him as we just considered

these things our " normal " yet now we are trying to challenge these thoughts

hoping to at least allow for some rational discussion. I would love to know

about your kids/when diagnosed/treatment options and any and all that you would

like to share. It has been very isolating with family and friends as many people

have no idea about these issues. Looking forward to connecting.

I have a blog sharing our life experiences as my adopted son has severe FAS and

my two foster kids have PTSD so it makes our life interesting to say the least!

Hi Laurie, welcome! Yes, it's nice to connect to others, even online, who share

and can understand parenting our children.

I'm a single parent, 3 sons. All grown now, but my " special " child began with

OCD in 6th grade, tho had his " quirks " prior to that. He'll be 23 this months!

He has a twin (not identical) and my oldest son is 26. had diagnoses of

OCD, dysgraphia and HFA/Aspergers. He's always been " mild " in some ways of the

AS but then some areas not so mild...I always have difficulty describing it. He

never had any behavior problems, outbursts, but other areas were more difficult

for him. Anyway, OCD began in 6th and was so severe, took over his life and

disrupted the household.

So we had OCD through middle school, things did get better over time, had some

new stuff emerge in high school. He was on medication then and has refused

since. So was rough again but seemed to settle down, OCD bothering this time

with " bad thoughts " and what is called the scrupulosity type of OCD. He's

somehow managed and graduated college this past August. No job yet but he

hasn't been actively trying too hard either.

So that's a brief history for us!

In most ways it was easy for us to see what was OCD and then what might be

Aspergers (the need for routines, etc) but sometimes I was puzzled too.

Glad you found our group!
