Guest guest
, happy to hear that it turned out so well with calling the college health center! They seemed to respond promptly too, that's good. Interesting what they said about smart people. So your gut instincts were right, glad they saw it too and he's getting the help he needs. Has he ever been on meds before, wondering if they will continue that Seroquil when he gets out, do believe they may have him on some medication after. When he gets out, they most likely will have some therapy/psych appointments for him to attend set up. Thanks for updating us, will be interested to hear how things continue! Really glad he's getting treatment and seems to be fine with it too, not upset. > > Thank you for all of your input. I talked to the health center, who then contacted the head of his group of dorms. They asked my son to come to the health center and evaluated him briefly. Based on the eval., they decided that he needed to be put in 72 hour lockdown. This all happened yesterday and through the night. He was in the emergency room while they looked for an open bed in an area medical center. By 2 am he was placed in the medical center and given seroquil. The nurse said they gave him that to get him to sleep and
Guest guest
He has never been on meds before. He has had therapy when he was young, on and off, but refused to go once he hit middle school. Talked to him today and he said he did not plan on continuing to take Seroquil b/c of the side affect of dry mouth. He did sleep 7 hours at night which is great for him. He said that the doc. had told him he did not have a mental health diagnosis but had a dif. way of thinking/looking at things. Haven't been able to talk to doctor..The nurse said he had been going to group sessions and when I asked him about those, he said it was interesting. When my OCD son asked how he was doing , he said bad. He had planned to go skiing this wknd. so prob. not too thrilled about being in the hospital. A friend had brought books for him to work on. From talking to the dorm dean, he will have to follow a transition plan after he leaves the hospital and they will decide if he returns this term or takes a term off. So everything is up in the air, especially with the long weekend. I didn't know how my OCD son would take this news, especially since he worships this brother.I was happy he got to talk to him . All he said to me is why do bad things always happen to our family. I told him we have brains that make us more vulnerable and we tend to want to push ourselves hard and take risks. That seemed enough and he moved on to working on his electronics. > ** > > > , happy to hear that it turned out so well with calling the college > health center! Guest guest
thank you for your support. I appreciate it. I feel upset about this because this is all coming to a head for him. I know I needed to initiate the help for him but I know he is prob. pretty angry for turning his world upside down. When I talk to him, he always says he has to get back to his books. I think he is afraid of getting behind. I talked to his doc. last night and told him what had told me about no mental disorder. The doc. said that is not right and that he is going through psychosis and has him on Abilify. He is hoping it is an acute break and he will recover. Said he has formidable intelligence which I see as a detriment right now. He thought the intel. and motivation would help with recovery. . I told him that said he was not going to take his medicine b/c dry mouth and told the doc. to tell the nurses to make sure he takes it. Today, said he was taking his med. The doc. said when he feels better from the meds., he will want to take it. I told the doc., I wasn't sure if he even knew he was unhappy but the doc. said said he was. So that is good,he is at least of aware of how he is feeling. I don't think Johut n knows that there is a possibility he may have to take time off and thinks he just needs to get out of the hospital and get back to school. He has always felt alot of preassure from himself to prove something. He is the first one from this town to ever go to Stanford or any ivy league school and on a scholarship. Also the first ever and prob. only one in both of our families. So everyone is always asking about him and expecting major things from him. When he is home, he doesn't even like to go oout and see people. He is tired of explaining his life. He used to be much more social and friendly with people. Anyway, I am hoping we can get some treatment plan set up so he can be successful when he leaves the hospital. > ** > > > , well I'm used to the different way of thinking, had to adapt to > that with /Aspergers. > > But from what you said earlier, seems like more was going on since family > and then those at college who evaluated all felt something was wrong/off. > Wonder is he really hearing what they are telling him or if they are still > evaluating and so not wanting to diagnose yet...or could it all have just > been some stress/mental stuff from all the college semesters (really, not a > year of all that work/studying/pressure wouldn't break me right now, one > reason I've been a bit lenient with for wanting a break since he > finished last August). > > So he seemed more honest with his brother? Guest guest
Hey , well hopefully he won't be mad for too long, if he even is. I think they may hold grudges sometimes but accept that we moms/dads were just " over concerned " (their view) and were just being parents. Thing is, they may hesitate to say anything in the future as to how they feel, if bad, so push on this chance now! Though in your situation, it was other symptoms that presented for you to call the health center (not his saying he's unhappy, etc.) I know I hesitated (and didn't) call 's college health center, I was dwelling on the thought though. His OCD was worse, he was feeling overwhelmed with all the schoolwork/reading, grades.... I was prompting him to take the initiative and go. He didn't. But did survive, yay! Has he done well in school? For , grades went down. Growing up and community college was all A's those last years, but university was no longer all A's and " so smart. " Though he admitted he didn't want to spend hours studying and didn't, he also wasn't grasping a lot in some classes like he used to. > > thank you for your support. I appreciate it. Guest guest
He is still in the hospital. He was on a 72 hour hold and then today, they had a hearing for a 14 day committment. The judge determined he needed to be in up to 14 days. We had a meeting over the phone with a lot of people. Concensus from Stanford people was for him to take a quarter off to get better. He suggested he takes one less class and go back to Stanford this quarter. I don't get a sense that he is realizing he is sick. Diagnosis so far is psychosis, NOS and they want to rule out Bi-polar. The psychiatrist has not made recommendation yet so we are meeting again tomorrow. If he gets out soon, the plan ranges from going back to Stanford with some counseling/psych. to 5 day/week 6 hour/day treatment. He doesn't want to come back to WI and there is a poss. he could stay with his Aunt in Cal.and get his treatment there. We are ending the term with my OCD son and this always throws him into a tailspin. So needless to say, my head is pounding. > ** > > > , > How is your son doing? > > > > > > > > > > > He has never been on meds before.
