Guest guest
My daughter is currently on 150 mg/daily of zoloft. Her ocd spikes considerably approximately 2 weeks after her period and will last 7-10 days of pretty much non-stop thoughts and her repeating an reassurance seeking is all day. Her doctor gave her a prescription for klonopin to be taken twice daily at 0.5 mg. He wants her to take this only during this 10 days each month to see if it will help control the spike. Has anyone used klonopin in conjunction with other ocd meds and what dosages did your child use? My daughter is 16 and the information I read says the safety and effectiveness has not been tested under the age of 18. Thanks, Di
Guest guest
Just wondering if she could possibly do any form of exercise? I had excruciating, horrible ocd for many, many years. The ONE and ONLY thing that got me out of this state ( i had tried many, many meds), was dancing exercise, Zumba 3x a week. Dance and exercise is the release of energy; ocd is pent up, anxious energy that has no place to go. Just a thought. I know it's hard when she is in this state, and my 11 year old who has OCD refuses to do exercise. BUT I " m convinced that OCD isn't explained through western medicine, it is energy that has no place to go so goes into repetitive actions. In a message dated 7/2/2011 12:14:19 P.M. Any of the benzos are extremely addictive when you use them every day. I am 43, and have been on klonopin since I was 20 years old. I am still on it. If I were to go off it now , I would have to be hospitalized because I would not be able to function. I'm not trying to scare you, just wanted to let you know how addictive it is. Guest guest
That's an interesting perspective, . I find it very difficult to motivate my 17-year-old with OCD to exercise. She sometimes agrees to walk with me, but she moves very slowly and gets tired quickly. This is partly due to being out of shape and her extreme medication-related weight gain. :-( But I agree that exercise is essential for our kids with OCD. Guest guest
If Klonipin is used only occasionally, it can be a help, but using it regularly can increase the risk for dependence, making it hard to stop taking it. Our son used it occasionally when we were waiting for his SSRI to start working. It didn't make things stop, but it took the edge off and made it easier to tolerate those really rough spots. Has the doctor suggested any type of hormone therapy? I know of someone whose daughter suffers with her OCD greatly during her cycle, and they eventually tried some hormones. It helped. Just a thought. . . BJ > > My daughter is currently on 150 mg/daily of zoloft. Guest guest
I'm on the same wavelength. I have been using Klonipin occasionally for the past 3 months. My SSRIs stopped working, and I asked for benzos to help me through the transition while they're adjusting my meds. and looking into possible hormonal causes. (At 44, I have been thinking about the unspeakable " M " word :-D) I used it regularly for a few weeks, and now use it sporadically. I would definitely avoid prolonged regular use, because of the addictive potential. My daughter has increased depression and anxiety during a certain part of her menstrual cycle, and birth control pills have helped her. It was not a decision I took lightly, but it seems to have kept her from hitting bottom again.
