Guest guest
Our daughter really struggles with this. She recently had to clean out her desk at school and it was full of garbage. We reward her for throwing out her garbage, but we've not found a perfect solution yet---I hope to hear what other have tried! ________________________________ From: [ ] on behalf of jakesmom66 [siscomelissa@...] Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2012 12:17 AM To: Subject: Hoarding? I have read so many posts on this site that describe so many manifestations of OCD, but see very little on hoarding. Does anyone have kids that exhibit this form of OCD? My ds is 10 and has had OCD since kindergarten, but only began serious hoarding in Jan of this year. He puts most of what he saves in his closet, which is food, trash, bits of paper, and now I have noticed that he is putting clothes as well. He became very distressed tonight when I began to take the clothes out to take to the laundry. His therapist is working with him on removing some items, which he has done, but it seems that this has just increased anxiety and overall hoarding has increased. If anyone else has experience with this or has advice on how to help, would love to hear from you. Thanks,
Guest guest
My dad has major hoarding issues but no one in our family ever called it that. He has a 10x10 room in his basement with probably 10 floor-to-ceiling bookshelves crammed with books he will never read, plus piles of books on a desk, the floor, boxes of records and old videos, magazine articles, everything overflowing. A huge shop outside full of everything from yard sales you could ever imagine - 10 boxes of spray to spray on your car battery, 6 pairs of crutches, 20 old school lockers, do I need to go on? My son began saving every package that we bought something in, the paper that you peel stamps off of -- I had no idea about OCD at this point. I went through his room and desk and just cleaned everything out. That's when his contamination started ramping up big time. Rhonda Hoarding? Guest guest
It does seem that if one area of OCD is addressed, it just rears its ugly head in another way. So frustrating! ________________________________ To: Sent: Sunday, April 1, 2012 8:06 AM Subject: Re: Hoarding?  My dad has major hoarding issues but no one in our family ever called it that. Guest guest
My daughter is 12 and has a VERY serious hoarding issue. Her entire room was basically complete squalor, empty food items plates etc. if I went near it she would rage beyond belief. If I made a rule that there was to be no eating in her room she would sneak things in anyway. After two long years I had to have her admitted as an inpatient. SHe is now on prozac and now that her room was cleaned will NOT go back in there, has parked herself in the living room and is currently saving hoarding food itmes in the day bed in there. IF I say a word its rage. SHe is in therapy and goes to day treatment school, but it is NOT easy. IT is SO hard every day I want to cry. GOod luck Re: Hoarding? Guest guest
, I do cry a lot of days! You are doing so well getting your daughter into treatment and hanging in there with her. One thing with my son - I found that as I got him " nice " things that he really wanted - a new camera, a new guitar, a new laptop, etc., he began to stop insisting on keeping every piece of trash and every envelope. He seemed to actually be able to think about whether something should be kept or not. He's also " holed up " in our living room and will not return to his room, so I understand your feeling. I put some shelves kind of " around him " on a couple sides and started putting really nice things on, such as I mentioned. He got interested in the Hardy Boys so I started a collection on one shelf. I have gotten really nice stuffed toys -like Charlie Brown or Bob the builder - cute, that look out at him smiling. I put photos of him out doing fun things and people smiling, etc. I asked him one time if he minded if I cleaned up his plate and food after he's done and he said I could, so I've been able to do that. Sometimes he will let me throw other things away if I ask, especially after getting something new. I try to keep surprising him with new things that I pick up. Sometimes I will ask if an old piece of trash can go in order to make room for a new thing (but I'm careful it's something that is worth keeping.) His hoarding was partly my fault in that I bought lots of little junky stuff when he was younger but not anything he really liked. :/ Rhonda Hoarding? Guest guest
WE can both cry together! SO he won't return to his room because it was cleaned, or thing were thrown awa or moved? Living with someone with hoarding issues is like paying musical chairs with rooms, things, life. It's just about to drive me crazy myself! I had ocd myself for years which is thankfully officially out of business in my brain! SO HER ocd/hoarding is testing my patience in every way possible, especially spiritually because I constantly ask WHAT i'm supposed to be learning from this experience and I " m not feeling it yet, which bothers me! Surrender? unconditional love? WHAT! SO keep on keepin' on, we will get through this! Best Re: Hoarding? , I do cry a lot of days! Guest guest
Bless you, ! I'm not totally sure why he won't return (can you relate??)! It started with taking so long to clean before getting in bed that he finally started sleeping on sofa, where he could sleep in his clothes without changing. It seemed that bed was so clean, he couldn't get in without being perfectly clean. But last week I asked if I could bring quilt from his room to use in extra downstairs all-purpose room where he now sleeps. He said only if I washed it first. ???? Is his room now dirty? I know he felt furious when I went through his room. I think that's probably when it started. PLEASE tell more about your story and how OCD is no longer in business! What path did you take? How did you get out? I need to hear more stories like this!! Rhonda Hoarding? I have read so many posts on this site that describe so many manifestations of OCD, but see very little on hoarding. Guest guest
, my son is ten and has been on Prozac since middle of Feb. When his dose went up to 20mg, he became very angry, very bad episodes of rage. He also began talking about wanting to hurt himself. He is back down to 10mg now, but the hoarding and other OCD stuff (touching, mental rituals, etc.) is worse. I have to sneek and look in his closet to take out rotting food when I can. the rest I leave for now, at therapist advice. I have heard that hoarding is much more resistant to treatment than other types of OCD. Have you heard anything similar? I am so sorry to hear that you are having similar problems, my heart goes out for you as I know how hard it can be. Hang in there ________________________________ To: Sent: Sunday, April 1, 2012 10:24 AM Subject: Re: Hoarding?  My daughter is 12 and has a VERY serious hoarding issue.
