Hi ,

I'm going by your remark that Dana is high functioning, so:

How much preparation had you done to get Dana ready for having periods?

Could her lack of reaction be a result of expecting it and knowing what it

is?

My dd's school had taught developmental health last year, and I followed up

with Q & A and other preparations since then, so she may freak but she may

just think " Oh yeah this is what they told me about. "

I'll find out when the time comes!

It may be you and Dana just need some time to see how she reacts once

things settle down. After all you and she have years to work out what's

best for her. You don't have to make the decision this instant in the first

rush of concern, you have plenty of time to work out what's best. :-)

Umm, I'm not sure why you feel my question/comments about estrogen was

unkind. I was asking simply because you did not say why, I did not

know if there was a medical reason that you & your doctor were

considering it, I was trying to figure out which angle you were coming

from so I would know what little suggestions I could make. I'm sorry

if the fact that estrogen can fuse bones prematurely upsets you, I was

simply stating the reason that hormones with estrogen would be an

issue to bone growth. Anything beyond that is your inference, not my

intent.

Sandi,

Dana didn't have any prep we were getting things in place

the Dr. told us we had a yr and a half so with health ed coming and

help from me at home as well from her behavioral trainer we were

starting to get her situated. Showering by her self she is becoming

aware of her self and wanting to be more independant but at the same

time is still liking pre school programs on tv etc I hope you get the

jist of this she understands things at different levels and has alot

of different sensory issues that set her off. Toileting and bathroom

issues are one of her biggest problems I have had her in the hospital

for a severe kidney infection due to her not going to the bathroom

properly she has to be reminded and made to go to the bathroom or she

would quite honestly only go when totally desparate. I have a younger

daughter who is ten and autistic as well high functionining and very

behavioral. Her understanding of any of this is only to do what she

is told they tried to explain what was going on and she faded off and

wanted to go play. She has to be supervised in the bathroom to make

sure she washes her hands and cleans her self all the time now. It

is alot I am not sure what i am doing right now but I do inted to

make sure that I am doing the best and safest thing for my daughter.

Hi-

I am on depo and have been for almost 13 years. I love it, but I am an

adult and not planning on doing any growing. I do have to have regular bone

scans. I don't know what the effects are on children. I have seriously

thought about getting it for Kayla (12). She hadn't started her period yet,

but we have talked about it with her forever and she stated wearing panty

liners to get the feel.

I wish I had the info you need to make a good decision. I totally

understand the reasons why you would want to use it, just don't know what

the problems could be.

Good luck

Hey, I can understand...well, I can't understand, none of my girls

have experienced their first cycle, but I can understand that you are

freaked out, may God have mercy on anyone within typing/screaming

distance when I go through what you are!

I get so mad when doctors act like they can predict first cycles. I've

heard enough that I don't believe there's any possible way. And as I

type this I'm hoping our geneticist can predict Allie's after all the

hormonal tests he just did, how crazy is that???

I would encourage you to consider giving it a couple of cycles with

some social stories & rewards for good hygiene. Has she made any

written/verbal communication as to what she wants to do? She may

surprise you and really do well, or you may find after lots of trying

she just can't handle it, but at least then you'll know you gave it

all you could. Then if she does need hormonal assistance that may have

some negatives, you can do it with a clear mind that you tried every

way you could.

All that said, only you know what's best. And I'm learning from all of

you going through it now, so please share what happens, I'm making

mental notes to help prepare my girls.

Understood ,

It's so stressful having a major life change dropped in your lap before you

had time to get ready for it.

I hope to reassure you, really. I got some great advice from Allie's doctor

once that has saved my sanity a bunch of times. I was really agonizing over

whether to do something, and he said " Remember that you aren't married to

every choice you make for her. Make the best decision can, but over the years

you're going to have to throw some of them out and try again. "

Sandi

PS It sounds like we have a number of things in common with our daughters.

My Allie will be 13 in a few weeks, but she is still very young emotionally.

I'd place her at about age 9 with moments of being about 3-4. She also has

trouble going to the bathroom when needed, and struggles with self help

skills.

Your remark about their understanding things at different levels really

struck a cord. I am banging heads with Allie's counselor and math teacher

right

now because they can't get their minds around the concept of who Allie is and

what she can and can't do. I keep trying to get them to just think of her

as a brilliant 9-year-old who skipped 3 grades, and give her a break. LOL -

My aspie dd sounds a lot like your Dana. My dd has always been a bright child

academically on grade level but emotionally much younger and her interests did

not match her grade level peers. She watched preschool shows for a long time.

Now at 15 still occasionall does if she's home sick. But for the most part now

she really concentrates on figuring out what is age appropriate. (She's really

trying to fit in to a peer group and for the first time doing well).

My dd first period was a disaster, so I can relate to what you are going

through. First off, she didn't tell me that she had started so she had no

" supplies " and we were on vacation, lol, sounds wonderful. Her behavior was a

little off but being that we were on vacation without our typical schedule, that

in itself didn't give off any alarms. I did discover her dirty bloody clothes

in the hotel room and immediatly gave her the supplies she needed and told her

she should have told me. Well, the problems continued because she hated the

feel of the pads in her underware so it was difficult to get her to wear them.

It took us months of trying every brand of pad out in the world to finally find

one that she could tolerate. And now she is wearing pads, cleaning herself up,

finally disposing of them properly.

The first period, I believe could be scary for any child ASD or NT without

information prior to the event. I am sorry that your Dr. was off so much on his

estimation on when she'd start. My dd's ped. was pretty much right on the money

regarding when my dd would start. Good luck. I hope my experience will help

it started here and slowly spilled over into school. She is high

functioning autistic she understands things at about the level of a

well. The period was nothing two spottings and nothing else but she

had the behaviors those were bad. She had no clue of what was going

Good luck. I hope my experience will help

you.

I'd suggest you do training of wearing light pads & graduating to thick pads

over a period of time. As I've posted before, I had my daughter start with

the pantiliners. She'd put it on & immediately take it off & gradually

increasing the time she wore them. When she could keep it on & forget about

them, then we started to increase the thickness of the pads & again started

slowly. By the time her period started, she was totally fine wearing the

pads. Even though your daughter has started her period, start practicing

daily with the pantiliners as described previously. Hopefully when she

starts again, it will be a better experience. Good luck!

Reading this, it sounds to me like you are explaining my daughter.

Although, she is 9 and has not started yet, but the bathroom stuff is

my daughter to a " T " . She has to be constantly told to go and will

hold it forever! Luckily I have not had to have her under doctors

care for any UTI's or kidney infections. I just try to give her

loads of water everyday and she drinks mona-vie to help with any

diegstive issues. She does not shower herself and she is still

watching all the pre-school programs. I don't have a plan for when

she starts, I hardly have a plan for tomorrow.

HI ,

I really feel for you. My 11 year old hfa started this past

December (When she was 10!!! and before her 12 year old sister!!)

I started preparing her for it last fall by using pads and red food

coloring. I put the pad on an old pair of panties and said " It's

period time " . I put the food coloring on. Then I modelled taking the

pad off of the panties--careful don't touch the blood! Roll it in

tissue and throw it in the garbage. Hurray! Now we put a clean one

on!

I didn't have as much time as I thought, but when she did get it, she

had a bit of an idea of what was happening. Now she's almost

completely independent with it.

Maybe over the next couple of weeks you could set up some " practices " .

It helped my daughter when she realized that all ladies get periods.

I also found a social story on the internet and it talks about the

period, cramps, pads etc.

I wish you the best of luck.
